I havnt never seen these used besides by neighbors who use them
.after using one on a plow you swear someone went over it with a rotary tiller a few times .i wished i would have made a video or tooking pictures atleast .were disc drags more popular back in the old days ?.his is held in place and does nt move much , it is a 9ft long 2x10 bolt to two metal arms that hang off the back of the disc and just about a 1" lower than what the disc pans sit . ill take pictures tomorrow if i find my camera

I am always looking for a way to smooth up after disking, I would like to see the pics. How about both of the implement and the ground that has just been disked using it? I currently drag three heavy steel 4 inch pipes about 3 feet apart connected together by chains, behind my disk. It works but not as good as I would like. be interested in seeing what you are talking about.

Instead of hooking your pipes together with chains it would work much better for leveling if you had them all solidly attached.

Run a heavy piece of channel iron down both sides and weld them in place. The three pipes will work together rather than separately. You will be quite surprised at the difference.

this plow is old likely form the early 70's me and my neighbor replaced all the main bearings and all the disc pans went from a 16" disc to 18" plain unotched .i think it is a 8ft disc .i told him after spending 3 days rebuilding it we should have painted it, he laughed .

Used to see these all the time in SW GA in the 70s. Fixed mount, drag board was set at an angle to the ground behind the disc. Thought the concept was fairly common?

I drag old tires behind my old Towner offset disc

A neighbor gave me the tires--I supplied the chain to tie them together and hook onto the disc. Inexpensive and it works fine. Field is smooth after a few criss-cross passes with the disc/drag combo. The white cylinders are 120 lb concrete weights to get the disc to bite better in the dry, hard soil (we disc and plant in Oct at the start of the wet season and harvest in May--Kanota oats in my case).

GW, I will try that first chance I get. I get too much bouncing around with them pulling indepently. It sounds logical, just need to locate some suitable heavy channel iron. I'm also going to try and modify my disk someway, if I go too fast, it leaves a 5 inch high or more center hump trailing the disk. But if I slow down to a snails pace, it doesn't leave quite the hump. But, I'm not patient enough to take hours and hours doing it that way.

I use what my grandfather used to call a "float". It's just 4 or 5 2x8s nailed together like an old wash board. It's cheap and works great. I just hook it up with chains behind my disk. Heres a sketch of it.

Don't want to hijack this thread but you must have a 3 PH tandem disc. Those rear gangs tend to throw the dirt to the center and create a nice pile down the middle of the pass.

A good leveler, like when you make a solid unit out of the three pipes, will help.

Also, if your tandem disc is adjustable, adjusting the rear gangs for less bite will decrease the throwing. It will still disc well enough and will be easier on your tractor with less drag. Experimenting to find the right angle for the rears will make things clearer.

I resemble many of these posts. For years, before I purchased my tractor and implements last October, I used everything imaginealbe to smooth the surface before planting food plots, and to work the seed into the soil. I would hire out the discing, so I had little control over the smoothness of the soil when I arrived with 4-wheeler, seeder and contraption of the year.

I have used the tires connected with chains, 2x10s connected with chains, chain link fence and 4x4s, and even a couple of chairs tied together one year. You do what you have to do.

Included in my purchase recently was a 7 foot wide drag harrow. I look forward to some smooth soil for planting this year.
