Disc Harrow Disc Harrow - Too MUCH hp?

bindian That's a very nice looking disc. I just can't afford to spend that kind of money on something I'll rarely use after this project so I'm stuck trying to find something to make work.

My brother-in-law has a 10' pull behind but with the amount of money I think I'd have to put in it to get it transportable then I'd rather just buy my own even if it's much smaller. He estimates it is in the 6000 lb range. He pulled it with a Ford 9000 (110hp/12k lbs) and said it's all the tractor wanted. I've got partially hilly land so I'm not even sure I could pull it even with the tires partially down. Plus I'd have to pull it 5 miles just to get it to my land.

Then I'd would look for just a drag disc harrow and leave it on your land. No wheels, no 3PH. Just the draw bar pulling dead weight. My Uncle had one. He pulled it with his Farmall. My disc would be too much for hills with our Mahindras. Their are folks on here waiting to find a 6 foot disc like mine. The disc you seek is out there. It just takes some time and looking.

HappyNC - My current tractor is a Kubota M6040. I see by my owners manual that its rated for 1000# with a 3-point disk harrow. The M7040 is rated at 1200#.

This time of year my ground is just like concrete. Soooo...... I use the bottom plow first to turn the dirt - followed by the disk harrow to break it up and kind of level it out somewhat. My ground has never been tilled but once I break it then in subsequent years the disk harrow works OK on the previously tilled areas.

it has not been said.... hooking a cat 1 equipment up to a cat 2 tractor requires some sort of bushings / pin adjustments. pending on the cat 1 hook up on the equipment. (cat 2 has bigger holes / larger diameter pins) some cat 1 equipment are setup so they can be interchanged between cat 1/2 (for example cat 1 inside, cat 2 outside of the Triangleish frame mounts)

when getting up into cat 2 tractors. sometimes they give different holes on rear end of tractor, for lower lift arms and top link. to adjust between cat 2 and cat 1 setups as well.

Your statement above is confusing. I read online your 3PH will handle 3300 pounds and a 7040 will handle 3307 pounds also. I found these specs. here https://www.kubota.com/product/M5040/pdf/m40series_spec.pdf

Brandi - you are absolutely correct. As a matter of fact - from the SPEC PAGE in my op manual it says -- max lifting force at lifting points- 4189 lbs //// max lifting force 24 inches behind lifting point- 3307 lbs. This weight limitation is the same for M5040 - M6040 - M7040.

Now from the IMPLEMENT LIMITATION PAGE in my op manual -- max wt for disk harrow for M6040- 1000 lbs. Actually as I look down the list of some 16 listed implements - the max recommended weight for all of them is 1000 lbs. Except for drawbar disk harrow- 2750 lbs - - backhoe- 2000 lbs - - .

That's why the Kubota dealer told me not to worry about a 1200 lb disk harrow. I'm also sure it has to do with how far back the center of mass is for the implement and such odious things as - product liability, potential damage and the "all to universal" product liability law suit.

This would certainly seem to be quite conservative, especially for those implements which are on a "short leash".

Very, considering a B3300 is rated at 1,400 pounds of lift 24" beyond the lift arms!

We did 8 acres years ago and after reflection believe the best idea is to spray it with Roundup and/or 2,4-D to kill off the weeds and shoots. Then go back later and disc it when things are more mellow. Disking now will be difficult and lots of weeds will escape. Just my two cents.

This is what i would do, except i would tank mix something like roundup (glyphosate), garlon and or tordon to really smoke the stuff and work on the roots and stumps.

A 1000lb is not a very heavy implement for a 60+ HP tractor? I think that too is way under extimated!!! I am lifting a 600# finish mower and a disk that is ballested heavier than that with my 24hp yanmar!

1,250# 1st pass. Handles no prob with my smaller tractor.
