Disc.... Hydraulic or not hydraulic

3 pt disk was a while back and I don't own it anymore. But I still use a 9 shank 3 pt chisel plow. The same tractor that pulls the disk will spin the tires when pulling the chisel plow when the rear wheels hit a depression.

get the heaviest per linear foot just to cover your tire tracks. So 8' or 7.5' is what you need. pull-type offset. Don't bother with 3 pt., waste of time, hard on the hitch.

Normally, heavy discs need 10-15 HP per linear foot.

I don't quite understand your post. You say to get 7.5-8' pull type, off set disk as heavy as possible. This normally takes 10-15 hp per foot width according to you. This guy has a 50hp tractor, so by your post he should be getting at the maximum a 5' wide disk and yet you recommend much larger.

Please clarify for others.

What I hear from the OP is that he will be doing minimal discing in realitively loose soil. I'd buy whichever type I found first that was a good purchase money-wise and not look back. Who cares what others use.

get 6' from tuffline 38 series for 50HP

Not all discs are the same, it is not the width but weight per ft.

I've done 3pt 8' and 10' offsets (~200lbs/ft) on my JD5083 and they are not worth the time. You need something very heavy to do any plowing or bed preparation.

If I was buying a new disc, I'd get the smallest, heaviest my tractor tire tracks can cover. He should really take 2 bottom plow behind 50HP to flip the soil in the fall, then we can play with disc in the spring. To plow with disc you need a bigger tractor and a smaller disc.

I do bottom plowing in the fall, run chisel plow in the spring, then finish it off with cultivator or tiller (garden).

BTW, tuffline 63 series discs require 12 HP/ft. Like I said, heavy discs require 10-15 HP/ft
