Disc mower question

   / Disc mower question #24
Since we are on the top of disc mowers, what is the general consenses on running a disc mower on a non-cabbed tractor. Of course the manufact. state that a cab is a *requirement* for the obvious reasons but what do you guys as real user feel? Should I feel "funny" or strange if I go into a dealership to purchase a new/used disc mower and the guy says, "so what tractor will you be running your new mower on?", only to find out that my tractor only has a ROPS? Is he going to look at me like I have three eyes or is going to give me one of those stern talking to's like your mother gave you when she found you playing with matches. Or are they all totally right and I should by looking to buy a haybine instead (altenative). . . or a new tractor altogether (bad right now).

I used a sitrex dm 4 on my ford 1710 for 2 years, I never had any problems using it without a cab. The dealer guy looked at me like I had 2 heads AND then came the lecture about using a disc mower on a ROPS tractor though they never hesitated in selling it to me. I used that mower for 2 seasons and then upgraded to a Kuhn GMD 55 and now I also have a John Deere 275 which I use on my cabbed tractors and I wont even dream of using either on one of my ROPS machines it feels much better in the cab using the mower than outside in the hot sun. The dealer will probably not have a problem selling you the disc mower but for your best interest i suggest the cab tractor :D

I used a Kuhn disc mower for several years with an open station JD 2755. No real problem but be prepared to get covered with dirt when you hit gopher mounds or fire ant mounds if you have them. The skirt around the mower stops most flying objects but rocks can get thrown. Wear ear and eye protection.

I ran a 8ft cut Fort First Choice on a Mahindra 6000 4x4 for 4 years. Around here there are more folks using disc mowers without cabs than with. Sure is a lot nicer in the air without all that stuff flying around.

Funny story:
I had my dad help me one year cut 38 acres while I was at work. When I came home he was just finishing so I stopped in the feild. That's when I noticed he had the curtain up. I asked did he mow all that with the curtain up. I almost died when he said yes. He thought that since I had the curtain folded back (for transport) that was how he was supposed to leave it. I thought man I'm glad that was a clean feild. I also keep a lot closer eye on him now.

Thanks for the replies. The first disk mower I had ever seen was back in the early 90's and from what I can remember it was in a field with two big ol' Hesston cab tractors pulling balers and moco's. It however was on a mid-size rops tractor. At the time had no idea what it was.

It truly is a safety thing. Those disc are really spinning and they can kick up some nasty stuff. I am very thankful I invested in a cab after breaking out my rear window twice.

We have sold thousands of disc and drum mowers to customers using them on ROPS only tractors. We are yet to have the first customer being hurt while operating a 3 point disc or drum mower. The tractor tire blocks the 95% of the path to the operator of any object that might escape the curtain. Pull type units are much more dangerous because the are pulled behind where an object could be thrown into the operator's area. Yes you can safely use a 3 point disc or drum mower on a non-cab tractor. You still have to observe the intended use of the mower and match the proper size unit to your tractor. READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL.
