Disc mower question

   / Disc mower question #31
As CCI stated "The tractor tire blocks the 95% of the path to the operator of any object that might escape the curtain." I currently run three cutting tractors with Kuhn GMD 700,800 series cutters, one is a 96 horse non cab tractor..with the exception of the heat from the Texas sun, never had an incidence of broken cab windows or an operator hurt on the non cab tractor..

Since we are on the top of disc mowers, what is the general consenses on running a disc mower on a non-cabbed tractor. Of course the manufact. state that a cab is a *requirement* for the obvious reasons but what do you guys as real user feel? Should I feel "funny" or strange if I go into a dealership to purchase a new/used disc mower and the guy says, "so what tractor will you be running your new mower on?", only to find out that my tractor only has a ROPS? Is he going to look at me like I have three eyes or is going to give me one of those stern talking to's like your mother gave you when she found you playing with matches. Or are they all totally right and I should by looking to buy a haybine instead (altenative). . . or a new tractor altogether (bad right now).

If you don't want to invest in a cab, you can used the ROPS as a support for an expanded metal safety screen like I use on my Mahindra 5525 to protect my backside from stuff the brush hog may toss in my direction.

I use hose clamps to hold the screen onto the ROPS. If one layer of protection isn't enough, it's easy to sandwich more screens for added protection.

It wouldn't be difficult to add a short wrap-around extension to that screen to protect the operator's right side. I don't own a disc/drum mower myself. All of the ones I've seen hang to the right side of the tractor.

A $20 solution to your problem.

We have sold thousands of disc and drum mowers to customers using them on ROPS only tractors. We are yet to have the first customer being hurt while operating a 3 point disc or drum mower. The tractor tire blocks the 95% of the path to the operator of any object that might escape the curtain. Pull type units are much more dangerous because the are pulled behind where an object could be thrown into the operator's area. Yes you can safely use a 3 point disc or drum mower on a non-cab tractor. You still have to observe the intended use of the mower and match the proper size unit to your tractor. READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL.

Just pray you ain't in the 5%....

You are safer with a screen pictured than a glass cab. Do you really think a the glass used in these cabs would stop a rock traveling 170 mph? Most cab tractors are 85 HP and above and use pull -type machines not 3 point machines. It's a safe bet to stay on the front porch to not get anything done. Just realize an automobile is far more dangerous than a 3 point disc mower.

If you want to use 1860's technology use a sickle bar mower to harvest hay.

So, you are saying you are safer without a cab.

That is pretty stupid statement.

A 3 point disc mower and/or drum mower used for hay harvesting on a non-cab tractor is safer for the operator than a pull-type disc mower used on a conventional glass cab tractor for the same intended use. This statement is exactly what I am saying.

We have sold thousands of disc mowers and drum mowers for over 25 years and also have the insurance companies' industry-wide statistics to prove this.

Of course I feel the need to clarify. I don稚 cut and bail rock quarrys either?r maybe its the 18.4-38 firestones i run...so I guess that痴 why I don稚 see rocks and debris knocking out my windows and pelting us to oblivion! :D

I am considering buying a Vermeer Rebel trailing disc mower to be pulled by a cabless tractor and putting conveyor belting over the mower's curtain and flaps to double it.

Does Plexiglas or Lexan come in more than one thickness? How thick is thick enough to stop flying objects?

Does anybody else have a barrier they have put on a tractor or mower?

There was someone here that wired up some steel grating behind their rops on their Mahindra. Otherwise, it would seem your best option would be do go all out with one of those setups like the powerline companies have on their mowers. Is the trailed version of the disc mower you only option? Why not a 3pt. disc mower.

A 3-point disc mower is a possibility, but, then, why do some people prefer the Rebel trailing-type or put caddies on their 3-point disc mowers? I am presently using a trailing-type sicklebar mower and may trade for a new one instead of get a disc mower. It would be a lot safer as far as flying objects go.
