Discbine help - newbie

Drum mower conditioners very rare in North America, I think JF brought some in the 80's. I've heard they take a bit more power again than a disc mower.

The 3 blade disc mowers supposedly cut smoothest of any disc but I don't know about the rest of the machine.

Its interesting the module retro fit is available for NH. I've heard the first Deere shear system is a bit weak with modules coming off all the time. Who knows if this is true though.

I had a few people tell me that the 5220 is underpowered for a 9' discbine - can a few people give me any experience with a tractor this size and a discbine?
Thanks

There can be difference's in how easily a machine tows, etc. as well as the minimum hp needed.

What make, model of discbine?

Nonetheless, it seems from my research on moco's, discbines, disc or drum mowers that 45hp at the pto is on the short end of what it takes to run these machines. And, I don't think a 9' with conditioner is something I'd hook up to the back of a 5220.

Be looking at a 7' or so - IMO. Maybe without a conditioner (if you go with disc vs sickle).

I don't know anyone who has tried to run a 9' discbine with a 45 PTO Hp tractor. According to Deere the minimum for a 6 turtle machine is 65, 55 Hp for 5 (8' machine). Our tractor is 95 Hp and it does make it "grunt" to start it. To pull it at a speed that you would be gaining over a haybine I think you would need at least 80 Hp. I know on hills because they do pull harder and takes more power if I had less than 95 I would have to slow down. Right now I can pull all but one really long steep hill we have and not slow down.

Now I pull ours at 6-6.5 mph about 80% of the time, some times as high as 8 if the field is smooth enough, but not on the hills. On a flat it would go faster, just don't want to.

I don't know what a 5220 is but there is a local fellow who runs a 5209 with a Case/IH 585 (52 pto hp) in flat ground. He's not getting the job done quickly but he's doing it.
