When I had DISH installed I ask the technician what the difference was between DISH and DIRECT. He told me "In the long run,(after one year) not one thing. Same price, same channels, Some programs have a few more channels than the other but they are junk channels. They try to make it difficult to cancel, like with DISH you have to mail everything back to them." With DIRECT you buy the equipment.

Used to be the other way around, but now they all want you to lease their equipment, so you end up paying for it but not owning it. I own all of my dish equipment.

What ticks me is they tell you you are getting 120 channels , what they don't tell you is that those include the infomercial channels that you never want to watch. I would like to see them go to an ala carte menu so that you could choose only the ones you actually want.

In talking with Dish a couple of days ago, while I was getting options of cutting back this point came out...........YES, I am paying $6 per month for each reciever that I use of theirs.........When asked if I could purchase them, "Of course you can buy them outright; but you will still have to pay $6 per month for the signal to each of those"........HUHHHH??????????????

I asked several ways about this; but each time the answer is the same. Doesnt matter if you own it or not.........You are paying for the HD signal to that reciever.......God bless..........Dennis

I think most of us would like that, but I think it's safe to say it ain't gonna happen.;)

Like Bird, I originally purchased my complete system from Best Buy and installed it myself in 2003. The new receivers I have added are leased because you cannot purchase directly from Directv anymore. On my monthly statement the leased receivers are billed as "Leased Receiver $6" and the receivers I own are billed as "Additional Receiver $6."

Wonder if we could "back charge" $6 per month for "lease space" that their equipment consumes:laughing: Same principle to me, but would never be accepted.

Lawrence, how do they know you have an additional receiver? If I owned a working receiver, it would be hidden when they came around. I have my whole house wired and often go into my box to put in a splitter and change the routing of my DishNet signal. I have 3 TVs that can see the DVR output because I put the signal on a duplicate line and bought an extra RF remote off the internet. I can watch the DVR anywhere in my house.

jinman: when charged for the receivers, each receiver can watch a different channel: something you can't do by just using splitters: i bought my own receivers too: not sure that saved me anything?? talked to someone that has new service, an they have the same thing i have, and are paying a little less than $900 a year: with a price freeze for 3 years: some kind of introduction to dish special they must have had recently: but they don't give those to long time users: i guess i'll just pay it..but i am going to see if i can swap out one of my receivers for a HD one: none of mine are HD..neither are my TV sets, but that could change any day..

OK - heehaw...here is what I just did...Called Dish Network and told them I had received an offer from Direct TV for much less than they were charging me and since I had been a Dish Network customer for so many yrs. I thought I would give them a chance to make me an offer to keep me...They bent over backwards and gave me a new 722k DVR and another new receiver, free premium movie channels for 3 months, Blockbuster movie pass free for a year, HD TV free for life and cut the price by $10.00 a month..then I added Netflix on my own and we are happy campers now...So they will negotiate

I was paying about $100/month to watch crap and lots of infomercials that directv has been pushing. I dropped the sat dish about 3 months ago and put up a $69 roof antenna instead. I get 24 channels of free hd/digital broadcasts.

I get cbs (2 channels) nbc (3 channels), abc (2 ch) , fox (2 ch), ion (3 channels), pbs (4 channels) plus some others that i cant remember. what i do know is i am pretty much watching everything i used to pay nearly 1200 per year for for the past 16 years.....lets see 16*1200 = NEARLY $20,000 for TV.... was i nuts.

All i did was flip thru the remote saying ... seen it, seen it, crap,,crap,, reality crap... reality crap...hay, everyone love Raymond. lets watch that.

I had the entire series on DVD. so i was paying for what i had on DVD.

My brother dropped his dish 2 months ago and went with netflix for $8.00/month. he was paying nearly 200/month for his premium package incl HBO, sho, max, etc. and he told me he wasn't watching any of it...he had it just to justify his home theater room....

the US is a nutty place at times.
