Disks loose on tandem disk

Alan,
Take the nut off, then put a couple of washers behind it.

I see the spacers between the disk blades that look like barbells, and one either has a hidden end or the left end is broken between the two disks in the right side of the picture. Maybe just hidden. If broken, then the second disk from the right end in the picture would be quite loose. I may be completely on the wrong track.

It think the barbell looking spacer is partially obscured in the picture. I have looked it over pretty good and can't see anything that looks broke.

I finally got me a set of big sockets and 3/4 drive ratchet today, so I'm ready to do some serious tightening.

Good idea about put another washer in there. Maybe there is something worn enough to need more tightening.

I have a related question and this seems to be the place to ask it:

I bought my 20 year old tractor together with a well-used Leinbach tandem disc similar to these photos. I discovered the disc's bearings are shot, maybe 1/4 inch slack in the worst one.

How much bearing slack is tolerable for light use? I don't expect to use this much, maybe a family vegetable garden in some years. Will it cause any problem to just grease it up and continue to use it?

How expensive is it to replace the bearings and maybe a scored axle?

Thanks for any comments.

Does the other end of the shaft have a plate with 3 blank "pin holes" in it...there is a "wrench" that has 3 pins on a flat plate with a cutout hole in the center...has about a 4 foot flat handle...

I never could get mine tightened by burying the gang in the dirt...a neighbor came by, tapped just about everything on the loose gang with a 3 pound hammer...pulled this wrench outta the back of his truck and had me going in just a few minutes.

Ratchets are made for speed, not power. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Pulling too hard on them can break them or cause excessive wear. Hope you got a good strong breakover to go with that set.

The 1/4 inch slack is not abnormal for these type discs--The most important thing to remember on the steel to steel type bearings is grease about every hour of use--This does 2 things: Lubricates and keeps the soil forced out of the loose bearing housing. If soil gets in there and mixes with the grease? Those bearings can go shot in just a few hours use--Ken Sweet

( Not really--However--That is todays preferred method of preparing a seedbed with the CUT and if you dont have a turning plow and disc harrow already on hand, then roto tiller would probably be best way to go and about the same investment----Ken Sweet ) Of course, I was joking, but I agree the tiller is a good way to go, however, some real farmers with whom I've talked about it say that the tiller leaves too fluffy a surface, too fine. I don't know, but seems to me one tool that can do different duty would be better than having at least two that can't be used too much for other things. But I guess one could use the turn plow for ditches if necessary and disks could be used (with many passes) to do lawn prep. I figure to go with a tiller. BTW, that's a good looking tiller you posted. John
