Mikim, nah if you can hit them in the ear or right behind at 100 yards you can kill them with a 22, matter of fact when their in my trap that is my prefered method of dispatching them, I just slide an old sears single shot barrel in and pop they drop.

I use a 30/30 or BAR in .243 because that's what I have. I don't care about 1-shot kills as long as they die. Shotgun won't do much good unless you use slugs. Shooting them makes you feel better but won't do much good in controling the population.

Trapping is probably the best way. We used to have a guy who trapped at the farm. He used diesel soaked corn as bait. He said the hogs loved it. I don't know about that but he had good success. He used to sell them through in Fort Worth. Seemingly there is a good market for the meat with the diet conscious as it is lower in fat and cholesterol.

As others have said ... be careful. Those big boars aren't afraid of anything and a sow with little ones can be equally mean. One guy around here had a 300 pound boar try to climb into the back of his pick-up to get at him. Most of the time they will scatter as soon as they know that you're there but every now and then you run across one with an attitude.

Mike, I use a 30-30 pistol. It doesn't hit as hard as your rifle will. MP

We have a couple of traps set up. We use heads of cabbage sprinkled with grape koolade mix. It works well because the deer don't seem to like it, so you don't risk getting a young deer in your trap.

The traps we have set up have "interesting" bait. One part raspberry jam, one part- (please pardon me for this) human fecal matter. I have never heard of this type of bait, but our trapper says it is the best bait and so far we have trapped 5 hogs using this combination.

At first, I thought this guy was certainly pulling my leg, however I was out checking the traps the other night and ran into him "replacing" the trap bait atop the trap. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
