Disposing of road kill

In my area, road kill deer don't last long .
Either the Game Commission picks them up or if they're not "torn up " to badly many, many of the area people pick them up for consumption.
Most everyone I know eats venison; and a bunch of it ... ( myself included)
If an individual wants to pick it up, all they have to do is notify the Game Commission who will issue a permit to legally possess it.

Egon,
Yep , you have to go by the 30 degree rule though. If it is swollen enough for the legs to stick up 30 degrees then leave it for the hot dog factory.

Here in Vermont our very well fed game wardens pick up the carcasses for "proper disposal." But since he always seems to have venison in one form or the other I don't have to guess what his definition of proper disposal is. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

When I first moved here.. the closest neighbor's found 7 deer heads & remains.. lined up beside the road by my property.. they called the county. County came and removed them.. but then dumped it all on another part of my farm along a diff. road.. w/ the gloves & plastic containers they used to remove them.

I had seen the latter.. but didn't get to put 2 & 2 together until sometime later when talking w/ my neighbors.. if I would have known.. I would have lit a fire under some county employess w/ a few phone calls.

By the time rifle season gets going.. there are a lot of deer carcasses dumped along the farm roadsides. I just plant them w/ the FEL.

Where I live you see dead dear by the side of the road all the time. Usually the county picks them up within a day or so. It’s not unusual to see evidence of something haven stopped by for a meal.

One time there was a dead dear right in front of my mail box. For some reason it stayed there for a number of days and didn’t get picked up. I finally got tired of having to hold my breath /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif to get my mail, so I went down to the mail box with my tractor, put the dear in the FEL, took it back to my property and gave it a proper (6 foot deep) burial. Another advantage to having a backhoe.

That 30 degree rule really don't apply when you make the circuit every morning just at daylight. Gota try and be first you know.

Ok picture this! We had this dude in county that quit a good job in a industrial setting & started a business selling skulls on the internet! He had a web site & would go around & pick up roadkill or even go to places & get dying animals! Wild & domestic animals, didn't matter! Sounds a bit illegal 2 me but "Ask no questions & get told no lies!" When we hit a deer with car, we called sheriff department & was told not to pick it up!

That would have been dinner for me and the wife. The last one that got killed near me got only as far as the counter to be butchered and on to the freezer. Unless the deer was really damaged, that was a waste of good meat.

Actually there was a worst jobs show a while back and the had the (ASHLAND COUNTY OHIO where I live) department and showed them picking up the road kill and composting them using sawdust then re-sell the COMPOST to people all bagged up! lol anyhow rule here is if you hit is call cops and get a report for it and you can have it or give it to family ect.

I don't understand DOT saying it is the lot owners problem.
Is that a private road? I missed that.

Over here usually the wife calls and they are cleared the next day. The kids don't need to see some of these messes, that is for sure.
