Interesting indeed. I'm betting that was taken, say late 1800's or turn of the century. I'm also wondering what they do with the dirt when they get the bucket full? Would like to know the story behind that photo.

Interesting picture, I can see how they could control the angle of attack on the bucket cutting edge and dump it using the big hand wheel.
But what to do after it was dumped would be needing another picture.

Looks like too much work to lay track next to my ditches to clean them out.

Wow, that's a cool picture. Imagine how "state-of-the-art" that machinery was in it's time.

My railroad buddy showed me pics of one of those several years ago. They filled the bucket, then tracked to a location that needed fill, dumped the bucket and tracked back. He said it was painfully slow when they had to track a great distance to dump. Only beat those men shoveling the silt onto the flatcar by a tiny bit.

Kinda like the first autos. Barely beat a horse. Barely.....
