Depends on the tranny in question...
I can release the clutch & leave the throttle alone & my Eurovan will climb my sloped driveway onto the road. When I leave a stop, I need to get into second gear as quick as I can to avoid that good old 1st gear jerking. I usually get it into second before the back wheels pass where the fronts were while stopped.
I suspect that, as long as he keeps it in 1st gear, he'll be quite capable of keeping it in range of normal tractor speeds.
Of course, 5th aughta be a blast...
