There are some birds which dine well on thistle seed.

The only thing I like better than a will maintained yard is one covered in wildflowers! No mowing until the flowers are done.

My sympathies were with you until I looked at the photos ... now I kinda side with your wife. That is one pretty place.

Our wives must be sisters. We have a slope that runs down to our gate that someone, at sometime "naturized" with daffodils and narcissii (?). In early spring, I must admit, it does look pretty but I'm not allowed to mow until they have finished flowering and died back. By the time that happens I also have a bumper crop of weeds in that area that run to seed and spread all over the rest of the yard. I spend the rest of the year fighting back but it is a tough struggle that I don't always win. When I try to explain the situation to her every year I'm greeted with an expression that says, "So????????". I've tried transplanting them but after 7 years I can't see that I've made any difference except now I can't weed-eat along the fenceline until they die back as well.

Sometimes you can't win for losing.

If my flowers were in the pasture and not in the front yard I think I'd sit outside in the morning with my coffee and just enjoy the view. Sorry but that's another vote for your wife.

Going to have to go with the wife on that one. Mostly because I am not allowed to mow certain areas at my house for the same reason. Actually, my wife used to try and stop me but I would mow anyway. Then I had a little girl. She is three and a half now and loves walking the fields and picking flowers for mommy. If she saw me mowing them down, I know the look I would get. Similar to if I BBQd the Easter bunny or lit a fire in the fire place on December 24th. Not worth it to me so I will mow later /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Txdon ....You have a beautiful property. I don't blame your wife for not wanting the flowers mowed /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Wildflowers have the "right of way" at our place also. it only lasts for the first 7-8 mowings, then they start fading & they're history /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Then the serious mowing begins /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There sure are, Egon. I'd much rather grow them than have to buy them for my birds. I buy 50 lb of sunflower seeds for my birdfeeders and a bag doesn't last a month. The last one was gone in two weeks. My feeders are squirrel proof too; it's just birds, birds, birds. They do a good job of keeping the grasshopper population to a minimum, so I don't mind. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Jinman:

I just love to sit and watch the birds come into the feeder. At times I spread some corn around out at the lake for the Black ducks. They do a better job than a vacum cleaner.

Canola seed is also very attractive to birds that like niger seed.

OK, I give up. The mower will only be used to mow the woody bushes in the late winter and only trails the rest of the year. The thistles can even stay as bird food, so basically I'm through mowing for the year. Good, now I can reconnect the back hoe and start on more trails through the woods and a perimeter road which I calculated to be three miles, that ought to keep me in the seat till next year! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Flowers are something I have to be very aware of. One of my customers had some thirty year old something or anothers along a fence line. It was explained to me in graphic detail that those plants were as dear to her as what was in my jeans was to me.

Another customer late last year had me being very careful not to bother his blue bonnets and indian paint brush while installing the fence. This was a Harley riding fifty something that looked and acted like a big dawg.

I like them anyway, the flowers, and usually the customer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
