I love the look of flowers. You are right to leave them. Mowing isn't the answer to everything, here's a perfect example.

No way would I mow that!
Up here, everything you showed me wouldn't have lived through the winter. All we have are dandylions and clover to flower in the yard. My have some perennials, but they are in flower gardens.

Wow! That is really pretty. I would enjoy that as long as possible.
Our household comes to battles on a hillside. It is covered with some blue wildflower weed. It is really a sight to see. I usually hold off on the mowing as long as possible, when the majority of them drop their peddles. But I still catch the grief when they go.
It is something special though, and I look forward to next year when they return.

I would have to say that mowing them would be a crime at my house. We plant seeds to try and grow them, and the thistle, that would be one of the favorites. Does anyone know if the seed the birds eat, and I pay for, will grow, or is there another part of the flower that I need to plant. I have an area that I would love to do this with.

Egon ... your comment is worthy of a thread all it's own. The CEO at my stake, who has no trouble berating the task of mowing 3 acres of finish lawn and 3 acres of field grass as mundane and a 'not work' task, has no trouble leaving all types of hazards, some hidden for me to uncover before the blade tips or spindles find them. Let's list a few.
1. Dog ties - those green plastic coated steel 20 foot lines used to tie up the dogs (and/or goats in my case). I've never hit one of these with the mower yet, but if I do, I'll be at a minimum maimed and the deck will be toast.
2. Hoses. We have a total of 600 feet of garden hose divided by 3 locations at any one time. Every time I mow, I have to collect them. I have a separate box of hose joiners in the garage because I'm always making splices after mowing.
3. Every year, a new crop of crocus, daffodil and iris find their way to a piece of grass I used to be able to mow in early spring.
4. A new tree or a new raised bed - it's a continuous struggle to locate these - her agenda is where it looks nice, mine is where it won't become yet another 'thing to mow around'....
I could continue, but I shant.

Wow! Eddie those wildflowers look really nice. Are the white ones fleabane daisies and the yellow greenthread(thelesperma)? I've had fields like that, but not this year. The rain just didn't happen at the right time. Thanks for the photo. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The yellow ones are called Coreopsis with a few Black Eyed Susan mixed in.
My soil is all red clay.
About a month ago the highways were all lined with the yellow flowers like mine. I don't know if it's a rule or not, but the Texas Department of Transportation doesn't start mowing along the highways until the flowers stop blooming.
I saw they started mowing two weeks ago.

Flowers ... yes, thistles ....NO!!!!!
I spend every spring fighting those boogers at the farm. Given a little time they can completely take over a pasture and they are harder than hell to kill ... long live Grazon P+D.
