This might be a silly question, I'm a novice. I was told that the HST tractors will not roll when you take your foot off the pedal (you hardly ever need to use the brake). We have a new L3200 HST, and it rolls when on a slight incline and we do need to use the brake.

Does your HST tractor roll when on a slight incline when you take your foot off the pedal? Do you find that you do need to use the brake?

Mine rolls a slight bit. It's less than if it was in neutral though. I think mine rolls forward but not backward. It could be a slight adjustment of the pedal could fix it but it's not enough for me to deal with.

with mine, it will roll if the hst is not perfectly centered. On a flat surface, it doesn't roll, but on a incline, it rolls. The reason is the forward and reverse is on the same rocker and even if it properly greased, it tends to stick a little out of neutral so it rolls. When I see mine rolling, i just slap the hst pedal the opposite direction and it stops. I always try to use parking brake on a incline, but the eye can be deceiving what is an incline whats looks flat.

So if I were you, it doesnt matter if you have a geared tractor or HST, use the parking brake.

Mine creeps very slowly downhill once the transmission is warmed up. Creeps faster in higher ranges. Not like neutral though, it will runaway well, like its in neutral. As a note, on the Kubota HST's, pushing the clutch in on an hst on a hill doesn't cause a runaway either.

YES you need to use the brake when parking.

Thanks for the info everyone. I know you should always put the parking brake on when on an incline, but I want to make sure something is not wrong with the tractor, or needs adjusting.

Various people from different dealers said the tractor will not roll when on a hill, and you will never use the brakes since the tractor stops when the foot pedal is not pressed. Our tractor rolls on a much less steep incline than at the dealers. I don't mind if this is normal, but want to make sure there is not a problem or an adjustment required.

I'm going to ask the dealer, but it's helpful to also ask other owners.

Yes it will roll if parked on an incline. And if you set the parking brake, unless you make it a habit of hitting your brakes every time before you get ready to move the tractor, you will forget and drive off with the parking brake on (not that I would have first hand knowledge of that). So I usually drop the FEL down. Unless you are on a severe slope, that will hold it.

My land has pretty good inclines so like the others I put my FEL down and also my 3-pt attachment down.

I have a L4400HST and I rarely use the brakes except when I park it. If I am in low range it will barely creep with the direction of the slope. If I am in a higher range the creep is a little more noticeable. If I get off of the machine on a slope I set the brakes even if the engine is not running. You may need to adjust your pedal a bit to center it.

Howdy neighbor!

Those various people are just plain wrong. It is true you can use the tractor on flat ground without using the brakes much, but they WILL roll on a hill. I was backhoeing today on slight slopes and the tractor crept both ways (fore and aft) until I could drop the bucket.
