Do wear your seatbelt in your vehicle?

Guy, we all "gamble" with our lives in one way or more. In fact, anything can happen anytime anywhere; life's fragile and we never know when it'll end. In general, I believe in playing the odds. And by not wearing your seat belt, you're going against the odds; big time. And while I enforced the laws we have, I think we have too many; don't like the idea of a law requiring you to wear a seat belt; don't like a law requiring helmets for motorcycle riders, but I can understand the reason for them.

And I think I understand your reasoning, with anecdotal evidence causing you to decide to not wear a seat belt. I'm the same way about smoking; I still smoke. My Dad smoked all his life; died at the age of 80. His dad never smoked; died at the age of 80. Both had Alzheimers the last 5 years or so and neither died of lung cancer. Dad's mother never smoked, was adamantly against smoking and died of lung cancer at the age of 73. Dad's sister smoked just a couple of years, in her early 20s before quitting; died of cancer at the age of 63. Second hand smoke? My mother never smoked, but her husband did, her dad did, she was around it all her life and lived to the age of 85; longer than anyone on either side of the family. Anecdotal evidence? It's obviously healthier for me to keep smoking. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Now not many people believe that, just as not many people believe you're safer not wearing a seat belt. You go against the odds on the seat belt issue, and I go against them on the smoking issue, but we both have anecdotal evidence at least to support our positions. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Here is AZ I believe that the amount of compensation one could receive for medical injuries is reduced if you weren't wearing your seatbelt at the time of the accident. I believe there are several states that allow insurances companies to reduce payouts under these circumstances.

I always wear my seatbelt and make sure all passengers have theirs on. It took a little getting used to when the seatbelt law was first passed, but it's 2nd nature now. I also wear it when driving the tractor. Found out that it's a lot safer than hitting an unforseen bump that jostles the heck out of you.

I just read about two accidents locally about people getting killed, thrown out of the vehicle...they were NOT wearing their seat belts. I guess that beats getting a fine??? The ones who survived had them on.

That's really great - the insurance company gets out of paying for the result of somebody's refusal to wear a seat belt or helmet.

However, when the person goes bankrupt from medical bills, the state (i.e. taxpayers) have to support the person when they're destitute. I get to pay for their reverse-Darwinian choices.
