Just talking liability insurance here, I think.
Not property insurance.

Our homeowner's policy in S.E. La., covered the liability on our vacant land. As we added buildings (sheds) we added riders to the policy to cover the buildings. After Katrina, We were able to keep the homeowners for about two years because we were trying to rebuild. When they were going to cancel the homeowner's policy we converted it to a renters policy while we were building and living with a daughter. Now, we are trying to sell our house in New Orleans and the only insurance we can get is fire - no wind, vandalism, etc. OH, they would sell us flood on the gutted house (1st floor) - no thanks. Anyone want to buy a 4 bd, 2.5 br, fixer upper????? http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Our vacant land was no additional cost over what we pay for the homeowner's policy for our actual home. I just had to tell him about it. Just like Sweettractors.

Update: I finally got around to calling State Farm, who insures my house, & they told me my home owner's policy covers my separate vacant land liability, without me even notifying them or anything.

They didn't even want any details about the land; no location, size, etc., nothing.

Seems odd they'd just provide that for free* without even knowing any details.

Guess it's time to pull the ol' policy out of the file tonight & read some fine print to confirm.

* Free! Ha-ha! I am just too funny!!

We own a lot at a residential airpark and I called USAA who carries our homeowner's policy; they said that policy covers the lot automatically.

By the way, for veterans, if you were honorably discharged, you qualify for membership in USAA which is regularly rated one of the top companies in the country. They offer auto and homeowners, banking and other services. Check them out.

I insure with State Farm also, and have their standard umbrella policy that covers me if I am sued for any reason. The insurance is on my wife and me, not on the property.

Really? We have State Farm and they told us the opposite. Said we had to buy a high dollar umbrella policy to cover our remote land.
I'm gonna check into it again....it may vary by state- your profile doesn't say where you are.....
I'm just about done with SF...my tractor insurance is with Kubota 'cause State "Farm" told me they don't like to insure tractors and are priced to prove it, triple Kubota's rate, my motorcycles are with someone else 'cause SF rates are outrageous on them too...sigh, I'd just like to have it all at one place for simplicity.
Then there was the story where locally they cancelled someones policy when they found out he target shot on his land...

I'd like to hear the story about them cancelling the policy for target shooting.
