</font><font color="blue" class="small">( I never could quite figure out what the thumbprint was supposed to prove. If you've never been in trouble with the law before, or in the military or law enforcement, it isn't going to be worth anything to the bank. I guess if the check you were cashing was bogus, they could tell the FBI, "Yep, we got his thumb print!" and be happy about that! Do you really think the banks have the ability to check thumb prints somehow? )</font>
Banks don't have the ability to check your thumb print, but the local law enforcement does. There are two different things going on here..... one is the thumb print that is used to ID the check writer. With this system, it would be very hard for you to claim that you didn't write the check to the store. I do know that some stores are still using the system and they tell the customer that the check will be returned to them with their thumb print intact when the check clears. Today, this is more acceptable to people than it was 25 years ago. The other thing is that checks aren't returned by the bank with your statement any longer. As a side note, I told the bank that I would close my account if I didn't get back my canceled checks and they relented..... at least for now.
The second scenario is that if the check is fraudulent and the true check writer can not be determined, at least they can figure out who cashed it.
In both of these cases, the thumb print will be a valuable tool for law enforcement because it is usually previously arrested crooks that are involved in these scams. I don't know what the percentage of the population is fingerprinted, but I know it must be getting up there in the percentages with all the Homeland security measures that are happening. Twenty years ago, I made a police report about my car radio being stolen, and they insisted on finger printing both me and my wife. I asked why and the "claimed" that it was to determine our finger prints from the crooks if they recovered the radio. I knew it was BS and they were just collecting fingerprints to put into the National data base, but I needed the police report to collect my insurance claim for the damage to the car. Today, I believe that they would fingerprint you if you get caught spitting on the ground. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
