Jinman

Now that's an insult !! - Referring to jdkid as an Aussie !!

Crikey !!

He is from New Zealand and probably doesn't like the Aussie tag as much as I wouldn't like a New Zealand tag.

Cheers

A fellow I know in highschool had two Isetta 300s. He took me up to Baltimore in it once....we ended up in a pretty rough section of town when the alternator decided to give up the ghost. I had the honor of hopping out of that baby to give it a jump start, which admittedly was pretty easy to do.

We finally managed to get it out onto the interstate.....and we were doing our best to hobble along at 40 mph while all these big trucks whizzed by at 70, but our headlights were really getting dim. I'm lucky none of those suckers plowed into us!!

If you could find reverse gear in the 300...no problem! Just get out and grab the front bumper, pick it up and turn it around! Never leave one of them things alone in a drive in...couldn't tell where it would be when you came back from the snack bar! Course, now days, you'd have to know where a drive-in theater was!

Scruffy, I didn't know they made more than one model, and I only drove that one. But, yep, the single door was the whole front end, gear shift on the left, and best I can remember 45-50mph was tops. My parents got in it and when they started to drive off, a buddy and I just picked up the back end and let the wheels spin. Mother thought we were going to turn it right over on it's face./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

And I don't remember any of the Fiats except the Spider (or did they spell it Spyder?).

Bird, that gearshift was the darnedest thing in the 300. You had to push down, to the left and back(?) for reverse. I don't exactly remember the sequence, but I found it about half of the time.
The Fiat 600 was a four passenger (based on midgets, I think) 2 door. It had a top speed of around 65mph...really, really pushin' the envelope in it! I got pretty good at setting up on the top of on ramps, waiting for a truck to come along. If you gauged it right, you could come onto a freeway, and draft behind the truck. It would pull you right along with the gearshift in neutral. Came off a hill one time at 70+mph, wound so tight that it split the crankshaft in half. Too many rpms for the darn little thing! Cost me a $105. bucks for the crank...don't remember what the bearings and qaskets cost. A water pump cost $100 on it too. Spendy little critter! The Abarths were a little sports rig, and really nice. Zippy as all get out, but there were only about 50 of them imported to the U.S., and parts were impossible to get. I traded the little 600 + $300 for a 37 Ford 5 window deluxe coupe that was in beautiful condition...except factory stock with out heater and defroster! Colllllllld in the winter!

Aah, the dumb things we did when we were kids./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif It's a wonder we survived./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif Police Department employees were supposed to never be allowed to see the results of their pre-employment background investigation, but at one time in my career, I did see mine and found that the police chief in the little town I grew up in had said he wouldn't hire me in that town as a police officer because of my reputation as a hotrodder. I had never even been stopped in that town for a traffic violation, much less given a ticket, but I'd have to admit my reputation was probably not exaggerated./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Good point. Like calling a Texan an Okie (and vice versa) I guess.
Sorry, I should have known better, but was really referring to the "turn of phrase" rather than the homeland. Either way, I should have been more attentive to my geography. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif
