I tip at Sonic. I know what they get paid. I usually do the "keep the change" and make sure it is at least a couple of bucks. Especially when it is bad weather.
To not tip when required would be rude and to tip when not required would subject one to possibly being snickered at.
Geeeeeze, have you considered just doing what YOU want to do, and NOT give a dam what "others" think??

I don't care much what others think but to leave a tip when none is expected is financially foolish and to not tip when one's livelihood might depend on it is morally foolish. I care very little about the other person; only their effect on me.
Most of us like to make informed consent decisions in that we know the relevant facts going in. Don't assume a search for knowledge is a wavering to act on it.
I have read that Sonic workers get paid well and you aren't supposed to tip, but I have never seen an official statement from sonic.
