I tip at Sonic. I know what they get paid. I usually do the "keep the change" and make sure it is at least a couple of bucks. Especially when it is bad weather.
Do you leave a tip at drive in restaurants like Sonic?

I have read that Sonic workers get paid well and you aren't supposed to tip, but I have never seen an official statement from sonic.

I don't care much what others think but to leave a tip when none is expected is financially foolish and to not tip when one's livelihood might depend on it is morally foolish. I care very little about the other person; only their effect on me.
Most of us like to make informed consent decisions in that we know the relevant facts going in. Don't assume a search for knowledge is a wavering to act on it.

I used to work for Sonic. The carhops are the bottom of the pay scale. According to Glassdoor the average pay is $6.00 hr. Must declare tips for IRS taxation.
There are jobs that are exempt from minimum wage laws. An example is IHOP. The waitresses/waiters get around $2.65 per hour(as of 4 yrs ago) since tips are considered compensation. They then have to turn in tips to be shared by all employees. All taxable income.

I tip the car hop at Sonic, but it's not often very big. I try to give them at least 10%, but this is really a recent thing for me. I never ever tipped a car hop until the last couple of years.

I wouldn't tip them very much anyway. They have to spend about 45 seconds to run your food outside. A waitress in a sit down restaurant has to wait on you for your whole meal, and clean up your table.

I have not eaten at a drive in since at least 1980, (anybody recall the A&W stands?) and I tipped there, and when I go to a self-service place like a buffet, I always leave a tip of $3 for the person who brings our drinks and refills them and removes the dirty dishes for my meal companion and I. Now, tipping at coffee shops with a tip jar...NEVER.
