I do not have a home kit. I have 2 TDS meter (electronic) and someothers and some waters are high in TDS. I even ran the best bottled distilled water I could find with only 32 ppm of TDS and it was junk. It (high TRDS) effected my PH, ALK, DKH, Ca and Mg like mad.

Distilled should be pure as can be but you do not know how it is distilled. So far the best is 32 ppm TDS. To high for me. I even want to our local food store and walmart and got there distilled water. They were over 55 ppm. The max per FED rules is 500 ppm so the 55 ppm is very low, but not good enough for me.

So far distilled is not good enought for me...as the meters have shown.

Distillation of water differs from other forms of water purification (reverse osmosis, deionization, etc.) because water is removed from the impurites rather than the impurities being removed from the water. Water undergoes a phase change during distillation, changing from a liquid to a gas and then back to a liquid. It is the change from liquid to vapor that prompts a separation of water from its impurities.

Impurities with a boiling point higher than 212*F (100*C) remain in the boiler. Water and impurities with a boiling point equal to or lower than water are converted into water vapor and condensed in the final distilled water.

Distillation removes most inorganic sollids, all organics with a boiling point greater than water, all bacteria, and pyrogens. Gases, particulates, and other organics cannot be removed by distillation as they undergo the same phase changes as water and therefore must be reomved utilizing other technologies.

That's really too bad. When it becomes really inconvenient to get rid of, most people will just pour it out on the ground or down the drain. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

This is getting so complicated. I think I will simplify it and go buy some hydrogen and oxygen and make my own water. Is that two parts hydrogen to one part oxygen or one part hydrogen to two parts oxygen? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have to watch the TDS, as again it effects my ALK and hardness, PH, calcium, and magnesium. Also TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) have silciates and phosphates. It goes deeper since my reef tank needs things and not other things, but you get the hint.

All I am saying is that if you think distilled water is pure, think again.

Here are some neat things:
My Tap around 39ppm (pretty good here)
Fridge 37ppm (filtered through a carbon block)
Kent maxxima Hi-S RO/DI 0ppm
Evian 287ppm (mud)
Dasani 31ppm (Coke says its RO with minerals added for taste)
My grocery water 153ppm
Distilled water (walmart) 44 ppm.

Not saying it is pure, but light years better than tap water and cheap and easy to get. Not many people buy water at Baker Scientific. I use distilled water for my cooling systems, unless I am in a bind/breakdown, then any water that is available /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I agree somewhat but is also depends where you buy the water and what kind. The walmart kind is no better then my tap water. Even my tap water has less TDS then Dasani bottled water. Now other things in tap like pesticides, fluorides, uranium, chlorine etc are a different story.

Most fish stores and some food stores will have RO water. Some also have RO/DI water, which fiosh stores will have. For the benefits of it, it is worth the small price..around $1.50 - 2. per gallon for Ro/Di water.

I'm back again, since I'm changing all fluids. I have read to use "Fleetgard" anitfreeze for diesel, but what is RO/Di water? . I need to know the proper coolant mixture items.

Fleetguard is a great coolant. I need to go buy some myself.
You do not have to use RO/DI water but I found it to have less crap in it and better PH level. Less stuff in water the better.

RO/DI is Reverse Osmosis Deionization

I recently sent my windshield washer fluid to be tested, and I've found the brands from Walmart or Autozone are only a group 57 washer fluid, but the more expensive brand at the Exxon station on the corner is a group 63. Using the Group 63 washer fluid enables it to be recycled-- after it runs down the windshield, it runs back into the reservoir and I'm able to reuse it with 97.5 percent effectivity. I've got a spreadsheet that I found on the internet that shows even though it costs more to buy at the Exxon station, it saves me 52 cents a year!
