This is more than I ever expected to learn about anti freeze . /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Thanks for the education . John

Actually Richard, I was going to visit my local church and see if I could get a couple of gallons of Holy Water. Cheap insurance I figure.

Rat- I guess you have never used it and have tested both. If you did, you would know distilled water has lots of bad stuff in it. If you like Silicates, Phosphates, salts, minerals, metals etc then use distilled by all means. I have a tester at home and so far distilled water is junk.

PS. What does surgeon general care about stuff I use in my engines? He does not know anything engines. People should not drink Ro/DI water, it is too pure and nothing new (very old news).

I guess we the users and mods can stray from the topics now. hmmm, weird.

Not new therefore not weird.

I've found that unless you open both the drain on the engine and the radiator that it's impossible to drain all the old out. Therefore, I usually use 100% antifreeze and top off with tap water. Been using Mercedes antifreeze in our 1983 Benz all along. It's always crystal clear, and the radiator parts look shiney all the time. Had to replace the radiator about 9 years ago because the plastic blew out on the bottom due to embrittlement. Seal went on the water pump. Change antifreeze every other year on Benz and Tacoma. Plan to only do it every 3rd year on the VW because it's such a PAIN to get old out and new in and uses that "permanent" antifreeze from VW that supposed to be good for 5 years. (Regular ethylene glycol mixes are supposed to be good for 3 years.)

For about a year in Baton Rouge, our Benz service guy switched ours to propylene glycol when they did the valve job because there are so many more regulations on disposing of ethylene glycol. Didn't like this stuff because it wasn't clear like the Mercedes stuff. Switched it back myself.

"Green" type antifreeze is propylene glycol. It's a lot easier to dispose of than ethylene glycol.

There are a lot of shops that will remove the antifreeze, filter it, etc and replenish the additives and put it back. There's info on the internet. I was researching how to dispose of ethylene glycol. Ain't much you can do with it other than take it to a disposal place. Not many shops will take it any more, like they will (or have to take) used motor oil. Disposal of ethylene glycol is still a big, unresolved issue. It is very noxious stuff to animals and in drinking water.

Yea I don't know Rat. I used the Super Duper Extra Believable Home Water Tester Kit I got from the internet and tested all the Classes of water out there. I researched this on the internet and it was the best testing kit out there. No scientific proof but hey the internet is better than science or actual real life experiments. It showed that the holy water was lacking in water chemicals. The chemicals it had wore out way too fast and it was inferior to Class IV waters so only Class IV water for my tractors and vehicles now. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes it is weird when a mod can say "Looks like the concentration of some of these impurities is increasing. Is that proper Etiquette here? That is what is weird.

Again richard, do some testing and you will see high TDS. It is on the net but I have tested various waters and again nothing new here. Again high TDS do also alter PH.

Super duper kit. You are unreal richard. Do some homework on this topic since you are a little behind here. Again, a little education in the areas helps so look it up. I have done this for sometime (years) since my reef tank needs to have pure water. Nothing new here and again, if you think water is the same…figure it out. LOL..

I do test water since I need to and it is fun to see how bad the bottled water are. Some are over 200 ppm. It is on the net and I have do it first hand...shaking my head. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It was a joke, therefore not weird.

Mike,
I ran a topic test on this thread with my at home topic test kit and found it to be 99.9% on topic, but that was before this post /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am curious thoughHow does distilled (not bottled) water have minerals, etc in it. I thought the distilling process prevented this. Battery manufacturers require you to add distilled water. Batteries cannot tolerate minerals and other cantaminants very well at all.
