Snakes, bats and spiders. I don't enjoy any of them getting too close, but they are all more than welcome to share my land with me. They eat the things I don't want around.

If I lived in Texas, I would be armed and dangerous. You Texans should be real happy that I live in Ohio cause I'm really a lousy shot. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You guys can have the poisonous snakes.

glad I am out of the south and snake country. Two years at Ft. Benning was more than enough for snakes.

My biggest fear here on the wet side of the mountains is a cougar or bear but hey are easy to see and my dogs will warn me early.

The second big fear is the neighborhood Bald Eagle swooping down and getting my cat, he lives to hunt, and is good at it.

LOL! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I did a Google search on "snake boots", it seems most are from 15" to 19" in height.

Thanks.

I don't hate snakes, but I do respect them. Just last week some 4 legged critter decided that he/she was going to set up housekeeping under the siding in the front of the house behind the bushes. It pulled out some of the foam and fiber glass insulation, so I assume that it did some excavating of the sheathing also. On Friday, I set out the Havahart trap and so far it hasn't caught anything in it. I did investigate a little more today, and found that there was a large shredded snake skin under one of the bushes. My best bet it that the snake has already taken care of my rodent problem. All these posts about snakes and killing them make me wonder why people are so hateful of these critters. If, while you are in the woods beyond your home, and you respect them and don't try to intimidate, aggravate, or harass them, they will also leave you alone. There has to be a reason that G-d put them on his green earth. Why the need to kill them if they are just out there doing what they do best.. controlling rodent populations? I can understand the reasoning if you have children or pets and they are within your outside living space, but in the woods where they belong, this I can't understand. There are times when we, as human beings have to rise above killing just because our emotions don't appreciate the animals of our environment. I can understand killing for food, or safety, but not just for the reason that we are invading their habitat and they are there.

txdon,
Getting back to your question. I have "Snake Guardz" leg armors that go up to my knee. They are comfortable and reasonable in price. Got mine at the "Callahans" store. I really like them and as of yet had not had to use them because I have seen all the snakes I have run across so far.
A snake that is big enough is capable of biting through a boot but they are the best protection for your feet. No legging is truly tall enough. Snakes can climb and if you walk past them when they are elevated they can get you. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Our venomous snakes have a striking distance that is equal to 1/3 their body length. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
The snakes are not poisonous or deadly. They are venomous. The venom will not kill you if you are a healthy adult but can kill a small child. (Probably make you wish it did kill you though). The smaller snake is the more dangerous snake because they don't control venom flow as well as the older snake. The smaller snakes are not experienced biters and will almost never give a dry bite. Rattle snakes DO NOT always rattle either. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif They will strike silently if the element of surprise is, in their mind, to their advantage or if caught off guard.
I know you had run across a Copperhead but I have seen some posts with snake questions that I knew the answers to and I'm just trying to help. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
BTW, snakes are great for the ecosystem. I still kill the venomous ones because I have small children, but what I really fear is the Mosquito. Those little suckers only purpose in life is to spread diseases that kill. If you want to hate something, try the Mosquito. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We just had some aluminum soffit replaced the other day from when the hurricanes blew it away, and the workmen found snake skins in several location up in my eaves. Didn't make me very comfortable, because it means they were slithering around up in the attic crawl space! By the way, that was pretty much the last repair we had to make; it took that long for the soffit guys to get to us on their list. Hurricane season starts again in a couple of weeks...

Wi woudl much rather have a blacksnake aroudn the hosue and not have to worry about mice that to have a cat anyday. The snake will disappear when it sees you and will stay to itself as much as it can. Only downside is in the winter time Mr. Blacksnake goes by by, but I would be glad to work out a deal with Mr. Blacksnake to stay in the basement and he can have all the mice he can get.

Don

How did the snakes get way up there?

We are leaving the screens until next winter. The roof was done before we left and we removed the downed tree. That was the stuff that mattered.
