Still have landlines...

Noticed the cost continues to increase as new city taxes and "Recovery" fess are added.

In Olympia... not really much choice. Cells don't work in the area and no cable. SAT is expensive.

Would be nice if half the calls were not sales calls!

Yes because it is required to get DSL through the phone company I think but it is $23 that we get little use from these days.

Still have a landline with DSL internet. I use Google Voice to avoid long distance and zone call fees. I call ATT every 6 months or so and they reduce the bill. Just internet is nearly as expensive as landline plus internet, so the landline remains for solicitors and MIL.

Have a landline, and a cell. Recently actually got DSL, which is about a 70X download upgrade from what I had on dial up. I was connected to my ISP consistantly about 50K on dial up, but was only getting about 4.5K download. Boonies, boonies, boonies........ Thought about Excede or Hughes, or even Verizon Wireless... but too much buckazoids.. plus a limit on my downloading...

When I switched to FIOS they pulled down my copper line and the phone ran over the fiber. I eventually got sick of close to $60 a month for the line and some long distance time so I switched to Vonage that has unlimited long distance. I pay it yearly which comes out to $20 a month not including taxes. Paying yearly is when you really see how much the taxes are...getting close to the same price as the actual service. Ouch. The quality of the Vonage phone is so much better than cell we just hate to get rid of it plus we screen our calls using it. Only certain people have the cell numbers. Another plus is we get no telemarketing calls except for the Redcross.

We have a land line and up till last month we have not had any problems with it. But before that every time it rained hard we had bad static on it and when we get a close lighting strike the phone would ring. We always say GOD is calling you pick it up if you dare. I personally think that is what killed two computers and the fax machine and they all had a surge protector hooked up. The repairman said he found the problem and it was bare wires in the ground that was 4 miles away from the house. We can't wait to get cable out here but that will take them about 10 years from now.

we gave up our land line, had the number ported over to a VOIP service offered by our wireless broadband internet service.
couldn't be happier, since internet & phone work great, and for less than half the cost of phone & internet thru Bell Canada.

From an "international" perspective, I have a landline for my ADSL+ internet. I tried a Wi-Fi connection a few years ago and was desperate to get back on ADSL because as soon as the area kids got home from school the Wi-Fi speed rate plummeted to less than the old dial-up rate!

Calling "000" (the Aussie 911) is always an option, especially as I seem to keep forgetting to charge my mobile phone. BUT I really try to remember to carry my mobile with me whilst working around the property & on my tractor as a safety device. We all usually work around our properties on our own and at a distance from home base; if something were to go wrong (and an accident tends not to happen at a conveinient time) then a mobile phone could be a life saver.

Another reason for the landline is that, due to my house being constructed of rammed-earth, I can only get mobile phone reception if I stand by a window, door or go outside.
