Oracle's website shows Java Version 7 Update 11 released today fixed vulnerabilities. I found that I had a couple of older versions, as well as Version 7 on my computer, so I "uninstalled" all the Java versions earlier today and just now installed the new Version 7 Update 11.

Bird,
Good to remove old versions. They just waste space on your HD. My preferred method, if you get the automatic update message, is to ignore it but go directly to the actual java web site web site and check to see what version you have currently installed. If you have an older version, "uninstall it" using the Windows "Control Panel", reboot your pc, and then go back to JAVA and install the new one.
Folks think the recent versions of Windows don't need rebooting anymore, but it works so much better if you do reboot it often if you use it a lot, and if you clean out your history, cookies, etc. from your browsers.
All of the JAVA versions starting with 7-10 have a control panel of their own, in Windows Control Panel that will disable/enable all browsers with one click. The Java site explains how to do it. The way they show it, under security tab, was not the case on my pc but if you look around a bit on the other tabs you will find it.
The homeland security site did post a warning last Thursday, I checked, before taking action. The stuff you see on TV and read on the web from other sites is often old gossip, so it is best to go to the actual source.

Depends on if you have a 64 or 32 bit version of Windows...I did the 64 bit version.

Thanks, Ron. I don't do it on a regular schedule, but about once a week, I go to "Tools", "Internet Options" and delete all the old browsing history, cookies, and such. Then I run Piriform CCleaner (from CCleaner.com), and then reboot.

Thanks, I will check it out as we have three computers and I am too lazy to look up specs.

Doesn't matter what you want to know, if BELARC doesn't tell you, it's not on your machine!!

Spend 5 minutes looking at what it tells you...go to bottom of page....read legends...Even tells you what programs you are NOT using, thus are candidates for uninstall.

Easy to use, comes up as a HTML page in your browser.

As I mentioned above, I use CCleaner and when you open it, it gives you most of that information at the top of the screen.

Last week I read the warning and disabled Java only to discover my Gmail wouldn't run without it.

My son's a Mac system administrator, so I asked him. "There's one of these scares about every month. Java has a few holes." He saw no reason for me to take any special precautions as a result of this scare.
