So, I worked around a larger "small, about 50 guys" road builder, and mass excavation contractor. They didn't really take lunch, and I kinda asked one of the 4 brothers that jointly owned the company. He told me, yeah, some of the guys complained about lunch, and we had a sit down; we told them, sure, we will give you a 30 minute lunch, 100% paid, under 1 condition. I don't want to see you on your phone, at the truck getting a bit to eat, or sitting, at any point other than lunch. They all pretty much agreed that that wasn't worth it.
I have worked places where you had a mandatory 1 hour deduction for lunch, hated that. What the heck are you doing for 1 hour? I typically eat and drive to the next location. But, with that, if once every two weeks I take a longer lunch, I don't want to hear about it.
Now, I do see a strong trend to employees kinda almost being "on call" 24/7. Employers/supervisors expect folks to answer the phone anytime, be able to go open and respond to emails, heck, hop on a 30 min meeting, or do CBTs, all without being paid...
