Capitalism, communism & socialism all work great on paper. It's when human nature gets involved that things go sideways. Pick your poison.
I’ll pick Capitalism. As far as it being “poison” capitalism might cause nausea, but communism causes certain death.

Capitalism does not equal a republic or a representative democracy either. It's not a government system. At this point, the US has a mixed system. It is still somewhat Capitalism, somewhat an Oligarchy, and in some ways Kleptocracy. It also has aspects of socialist.

For Union supporters, the exact same thing Unions do is illegal for a business. It's called Collusion.

Great post, and as a business owner, this gave me a new idea. "It's not collusion, Sir. We owners just unionized!"

So, I worked around a larger "small, about 50 guys" road builder, and mass excavation contractor. They didn't really take lunch, and I kinda asked one of the 4 brothers that jointly owned the company. He told me, yeah, some of the guys complained about lunch, and we had a sit down; we told them, sure, we will give you a 30 minute lunch, 100% paid, under 1 condition. I don't want to see you on your phone, at the truck getting a bit to eat, or sitting, at any point other than lunch. They all pretty much agreed that that wasn't worth it.

I have worked places where you had a mandatory 1 hour deduction for lunch, hated that. What the heck are you doing for 1 hour? I typically eat and drive to the next location. But, with that, if once every two weeks I take a longer lunch, I don't want to hear about it.

Now, I do see a strong trend to employees kinda almost being "on call" 24/7. Employers/supervisors expect folks to answer the phone anytime, be able to go open and respond to emails, heck, hop on a 30 min meeting, or do CBTs, all without being paid...

Nice raise if you can get it! In my days at the Post Office as a electronic tech, the best the union could do was 1% to 2% per year, better than nothin!
Being a federal job, it was a right to work job, so some of us stayed scabs and did our jobs. When I retired earlier this year, my base pay with 30 years in, was somewhere around $83,000/year.
A family member works for the fed (DHS). Apparently, they give 90 days for paternity leave and allow you to work overtime while on leave.

The reachable 24/7 is very much expected in medical...

Before cell phones not do much and for essential, mostly salary and with pager...

Later, company supplied cell phones but since "Everyone" now has a cell company cells no more.

Maybe just evolution...?

I had a few jobs with a mandatory lunch break, when I was working my way thru college. Always jobs where you needed the full crew together to be able to get the job done.

But it's weird that a company top-down would impose some specific period for lunch. Why not just leave it up to the crew or crew chief to agree on how long they need? I mean, a company could say "no less than 30 minutes, no more than 90 minutes, and leave it up to the crew to figure out what works for them.

I went into a career where most work is solo at a desk, so no one cares when or how long I break for lunch. Most of the time over the last three decades, I've been too busy to actually take a lunch break, and scarf down a sandwich or reheated leftovers while catching up on emails.

Taking 1/2 hr lunch mostly results in over an hour lost of productivity. There’s no way a man stops at exactly 12:00 and is back to exactly where he left off at 12:30.
I’ll chomp down a protein bar while I’m working if I’m really hungry.

I fast through lunch as part of my fasting for health. I don’t miss it at all. I stay healthier, lighter & stronger that way.

One of my jobs lasted for about 10 years as an assembler. Everyday the whistle would blow at 11:15 A.M. Everyone in the building would eat their homemade sandwich. At 11:45 A.M. the whistle would blow and we would start working again.

We were piece workers, the more pieces we made, the bigger our paychecks were.
