Dodge Diesel?

Look for a low mileage 2006-to an early 2007 with the 5.9 CTD. I had an 07 and it was a great truck. I sold it because the quad cab was not big enough for my three kids and the short bed version is about 6" shorter than the competition. I had the 4spd auto with the 3.73 ratio. I also used 2 cycle ashless oil in it. I could get 19-20 mpg on the intersate 65-70 mph. The best it ever got was just over 23mpg coming back from the OBX running 55-60mph on Rt. 460. The 48RE automatic is fine as long as you don't add more power. The truck is also offered with a 6spd manual. If my Dodge would have been a mega cab I would still own it. The Cummins is definatley a loud motor but you quickly fall in love with it. I currently have a new Ford 6.7 diesel and I swear the Dodge felt stronger on the bottom end but the new Ford diesel never seems to run out of steam on the top end. I have seen a few on the used market with under 50K miles for around 28-30K. I know the local Amsoil rep and he has two Dodge CTD pickups, one with the 5.9 and one with the 6.7. His old 5.9 has over 700,000 miles with no internal engine repairs. The Dodge diesels do like to eat the ball joints form the weight of the Cummins.

about the same here on fuel mileage when running the stock programming... If I load it up with the 40hp. tune, i can gain about 1.5- 2.0 mpg...(pencil and paper calculated)
ive been offered 30K cash for it so far... its still not for sale..

I used to own a 3/4 ton gasser and then stepped up to a 3/4 ton Duramax Diesel, for hauling, pulling my camper, equip trailer and dump trailer there is NO comparison, as stated by others for torque u cant beat a diesel, just my .02

Well by your own admission you definitely don't need the diesel. But if you want it and can afford it, why not?

New diesel will cost some serious cha-ching, but it's not throwing money away.
Diesels have a much higher resale value.

And judging by your user name and avatar, your going thru some kind of a Dodge diesel complex. Get the truck, it will be cheaper than therapy :D

Thanks for all the replies. Right now I'm leaning on a 3/4 ton gasser, but I haven't decided for sure. The price of the diesels is what is pushing me towards a gasser. I looked at 2007 Dodge Megacab with the 5.7 hemi earlier. It was a nice truck. I'll see, I kind of let the right vehicle find me.

Just get the diesel. I bought a black 2009 Dodge 4X4 Quad Cab back when they had 10K off sticker and 0% financing. It's a lot of truck and just as much fun to drive. Pulls like a Russian mule on steroids to boot. Sometimes the fun outweighs the economics.... once it's paid off!

Well I'm all about the fun factor when it comes to buying vehicles. The place that had the Megacab also had a Quad Cab with the turbo diesel, so I'll probably drive them both at some point.

The diesel will probably be worth at least half of that 6 grand more at resale, so it's down to just a few grand difference.

Unless diesel fuel cost goes thru the roof AGAIN! Paid $3.67 a gallon my last fill up :) Imagine being happy about that :confused2:

If you drive both, you'll certainly go for the diesel but that HEMI is no slouch either. Luckily, you can't go wrong with either engine as they are both solid powertrains.

That Mega Cab is great if you need the room, reclining rear seats make in-laws smile and kids sleep.
