Thanks for posting the link to the thread. However, after reading it, it reminded me of most of the synthetic versus dino oil threads here on TBN.

Quoting Macbeth, Act 5, Scene 5,

Some people believed the Spicer test, some didn't, some thought there were ulterior motives, etc.

That was neither a rant or a personal attack on you. I am offended by the accusation. Scesnick was giving an OPINION. I was concuring. We both have personal experience with this product, so we are entitled to have and share our opinions. That's what this website is all about, right?

The moderation staff here has such thin skin. No wonder traffic is down so much.

I checked with a few customers on Friday, one has a 2004 2500 with an automatic, he says he gets around 17 mpg unloaded, down to 12 loaded. The other guy says he's getting 15 unloaded and 10 loaded. Didn't ask which trans he had.

The trainer told me that when Dodge started upping the hp with the common rail injection system, that's when they lost some of the fuel economy. I'm not saying the CRD part caused it, but it's when Dodge/Cummins was touting their 610 ft/lb torque ratings. To get more hp in a diesel, ya gotta turn up the fuel. When you turn up the fuel, your economy goes down. Generally speaking anyways.

I've got a hint for some Cummins owners. If your mileage has been dropping, one thing you can easily check are the hose clamps on the hoses to the intercooler. I've seen quite a few lately that are loose. Loss of boost = loss of power, loss of fuel economy too. There's a special fixture that we can attach to the hose off the turbo, and we can check for leaks. We've checked max boost before and after tightening the clamps, we've seen as much as a 8# boost increase before/after just by tightening the loose connections. I think my tech said for every 2# of boost lost, it might equal 1 mpg decrease in fuel economy. Then again, I'm probably a little off with those numbers. But it's still a common problem, easy fix.

I'd say your 2# of boost to 1 mpg is a bit conservative even. Very good advise on the clamps.

Even the older Cummins motors had this problem (mine did - 1994 stock 175 hp, 16 psi boost was enough to move the hoses).

OK, Mike here( http://http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/upgrade/Air_filter.htm )is the link I was refering to.. It is a BMW guru type site(not typicaly my cup of tea)... I like it because they allow both sides to put their own spin on it, so maybe its not exactly what you are looking for as far as definitive proof, but its more info none the less... My personal experience(for what its worth) puts me on the "anti" K&N style filter side for average use.. For race applications, its better than no filter at all..

BTW, why doesnt the link button allow you to shorten the link anymore? Am I missing something here??

Regarding shortening the link....

When including a URL link, you are prompted for the URL, but unlike the old software, you are not prompted for a Title. Instead, vBulletin;

A. Adds the URL markup language to your post.
B. Makes the Title the same as the URL
C. Highlights the Title text in your message, so when you type your Title, it replaces what it put there.

It's easy to miss the highlighted text and use the entire URL as the Title.

This discussion has opened my eyes. There will be no new Dodge CTDs in my future. I inherited Pappy's old 12-valve '94 2WD 5-Spd with 3.55 in the back. It gets 24mpg running empty (Pappy claimed 26mpg; but he'd LUG THET THAANG!) and 18mpg with a ton in the bed and towing three ton at 80mph. And it would do it repeatedly as I checked, rechecked and checked again not believing what I saw. Never any shortage of power either; though it never had to tackle the Rockies or anything like that.

My problem will be how to keep that old girl perking for another 25 years. Luckily Pappy didn't put alot of miles on it.

I can dig up pics of dust in the turbo on my Dodge-Cummins after running a K&N. It is all hype BS on these. If you are running a "Super-Tuner" autozone sponcered chrome wiperblade POS buy a K&N, they'll give you a nice sticker to put on the vehicle. If not, dont.

Those are the exact same resources I was going to dive into. It seems that if you have a product on the market AND a slick advertising campaign getting your name out there then most people think you have the superior product.
Not only is the K&N trash for diesel pickups, ( I have yet to see a commercial for Volant or AFE so they must no be as good !! he, he ) don't put one on your dirt bike either unless you like buying new carb parts. ( personal experience)
