Does any angle steel come punched with holes?

Thanks, Mace. Around here--and south-- they call the tines King Weeder Teeth or tines and apparently have been on rod weeders at some point because that's how they are now described. I'm going to use it to lightly rip up dead grass in the late summer before I slit seed in grass seed. Or at least that's the plan if it works. I happened to see an old rod weeder at an auction a couple months back and that's when the wheels started turning.

You might be able to use unistrut. Might not be strong enough without extra steel.

I have spent some time in a local shop and venture to say that those holes punched as you show in 1/4" or 5/16' stock would be less than an hour's work and probably run in the $60-70 range.

Any decent shop with an ironworker or large punch press can zip thru that with ease, besides your application is not demanding ultra precision which would help production time.

I measured some other harrows and figure I can go 2" x 2" angle iron that is probably 1/4" or 5/16" thick. Think they can punch those holes?

Yes. All the frames we had on the farm were 3/8 thick with holes to accommodate 7/16 bolts.

For sure!
I had 3/4" holes punched in 5/8" stock when I had adapter brackets made to front mount an 8ft fisher plow on a TC74 tractor last fall.
In fact they also punched 2ea 7/8" as well.

Punched holes are not as pretty as drilled but for your usage they'll be just fine.

Do you really need the complete length punched? I would bet that more than half the holes are never going to be used. Might be easier to make the frame out of square tubing and make simple clamp on brackets that can be adjusted wherever you wanted them, like cultivator shanks.

No, I don't need the whole length punched. From conversation here I think I'll go with 2 x2 3/8 angle iron of maybe the square stock at 1/4" think. f I do the angle iron I could get the 40 holes punched and if it's the square stock I guess I just drill them. It's not the of the world if I have to. Or at least I hope not.

You will need 3/8" angle. But what you should look for is a Pittsburg cultivator frame. There are plenty in old junk piles around many farms. This frame is what you are really looking to create, and most of them can be bought cheaper than it will cost for you to make one.

It may be cheaper to start with an old cultivator frame as depicted in your first post. Then just add in the third cross member. I have seen and bought old cultivators for $200-250. I doubt you would be able to buy the material to build the frame for less. That would only require you to drill holes for one bar.
