Does anybody make a 3pt hitch salt/sand spreader?

The Herd Salt spreader is a very good unit. It has a substantial agitator in it to break up sand/salt clumps. Unless you keep your sand/salt 100% dry and in some place heated, you will have clumps or some sort. Local mall uses one on the back of a scut to sand/salt the walkways daily. Other than maintenance and paint, its been doing daily work in the winter for about 3 years now. This is their second one, first one was traded in with their previous (8yr old ish) tractor, still working.

Thanks! I'll keep your place in mind - probably exactly what I need. What's the difference between the 150 and bigger units? Their listed capacities are quite different, but they look the same in the pictures and prices aren't all that different. Would I be better served paying a few more bucks and getting a bigger spreader? I do have an 1100ft drive, so there is an advantage to a big hopper...

The XA150 is best one for a BX because of hopper size and it has lift arm pins that are pointed in for narrower tractor hitches. It also has outward pins in case you want to put it on a larger tractor.
Beyond that, all of the models are the same.

How well do those cone shaped spreaders handle damp sand ?

Damp sand has a tendency to pack and not flow well, a mechanical stirring device needs to be involved to keep damp sand from not packing so that it will flow.

These cone shape spreaders are less expensive, and they do work well for fertilizer and seed because they don't have the same tendency to pack like damp sand.

If the sand packs, and stops flowing on a cone shaped spreader, how do you get it flowing again ?

It is NOT that hard to put an agitator is. it is still THOUSANDS less than the one you put up

Either a vibrator or an agitator would do the trick.

An vibrator is a simple enough device. Could be hydraulic or electric. Basically it would be a motor that spins an out of balance weight attached to the shaft of the motor so when spinning a vibration sets up.

An agitator would be an extension from the spreader disc that spins (turns) fingers inside the hopper to loosen the sand or aggregate that you wish to spread.

If you don't want to spend much, and you think you might have to modify what ever you get.
Maybe getting something used off craigslist would work out better for you.
I just did a craigslist check for Maine and a couple in NH showed up.
I did a search for - spreader - under farm and garden
