This is what 10k looks like, my '91 D-250 is barely big enough. However, back in the day when I was young and dumb:) my '70 F100 4x2 towed trailers like this...

At first glance it looks like you've got about a 6000 mile range!

10k on a 5th wheel is close to 2.500 lbs on the pin.

The only Ford F150 spec that I feel is truly misleading in their ads is the "best in class" payload figure of over 2200 lbs, when they are like hen's teeth in the real world. But my 2019 still has 1850 lbs payload, plenty to accommodate a 12-15% tongue weight for my tow rating of 11,000 lbs.

But a lot of guys who get the platinum and king ranch trims are surprised (they shouldn't be) that their F150 payload rating is actually as low as ~1200 lbs. Which means once you put a few guys in the truck and some tools, you can't tow anything CLOSE to the 12,000 or 13,000 "max tow" ratings with a proper tongue weight.

Gotta do your research and spec things carefully.

I don't tow that much, but I can't imagine hauling two of my antique tractors even on a gooseneck with my F150. Although my brakes are way better now after going to aftermarket.

Here's some scale weights I got. Where it says truck, that is front and rear axle of truck only on plate. All the rest are the axle weights. This was the first time I axle weighed it just to see if I need to load different next time.

My F250 with factory hitch has a tongue max of around 600lbs. It doubles if you use a weight distribution hitch. The factory hitch has the specs on it possibly on a sticker.

I have a low mile 4 door long bed 1999 F350 dually. It's a Powerstroke 7.3ltr with a 6 speed manual transmission, 4 wheel drive and a Dana70 limited slip rear axle.
It works great for towing a 20' trailer and mini excavator (10,000lbs ).
As i'm getting older my needs are changing. I would like to downsize the truck from a 4 door to a super cab or smaller 4door ( no more kids family to haul around ) and because of upcoming knee problems a automatic transmission would be nice. A diesel would be nice but not a priority anymore since I don't need to tow much anymore.
I see the newer F150s are as big as the F250s and some the tow ratings are over 10,000lbs. I also see the used F150s show up with traction control more than the F250s do. This is a must but could be easily added if need be.
I have a steep and challenging driveway the F350 has always towed the excavator up but am skeptical of a smaller truck

Any input from you experienced guys would be helpful... so would be a smaller truck to handle.
I have a 14k equipment trailer with cargo rating of 10,500 lbs. Normally I tow the trailer with a 10,000 lb compact track loader on board with an F350 V10 gas. Recently while the F350 was in the shop I towed the trailer and machine with an F150 I had rented about 130 miles. The truck handled the load much better than I anticipated. If memory serves correctly the fuel average was 12 mpg. Not something I would do all the time however worked in a pinch when my other trucks were in the shop.

My Ram ECO 1500 diesel came back to me from the shop but the F350 was still being repaired. I needed to move the machine to a job site on the other side of a 78 foot high bridge over the intracoastal waterway. This bridge corkscrews up to the top and down again to the other side. The little V6 diesel handled it just as well as the F350 with the V10 gas.

Again not something I would do all the time. I move small excavators for two contractors that don't have capable trucks. Mostly I do the move with the F350 but would not hesitate to use the Ram in a pinch. And yes I get the knee issue. Both trucks are automatic.

While I have towed over 10500lbs in a dump trailer (so, 14+k lbs?) behind a 2019 F150 with a 10400 lb rating, I don't recommend it. I am currently thinking up upgrading to a F250 for my 14k trailer.

I have also towed a 9000 pound trailer with a chevy heavy hand ton with a 454 engine, The heavy half only adds two leaves to the rear springs and I used an equalizer hitch, but I now have an F350 which handles and controls the load much, much better.

Old post...but I'll respond anyways.

I went from a 2000 7.3 diesel 6-speed to 2011 3.5 Ecoboost automatic.

I towed the same trailers and loads (sub 10k) No difference in power. Smaller brakes, but I never had an issuer. Lighter suspension so you may need to watch tongue weight more. I personally rather have manual transmission but the selectshift automatic has a good manual mode.

They are not the same class of truck really, but for towing now and then it will work.
