Does Everyone Have a Front Axle Leak?

Almost all oils have seal swell additive. Apparently, this additive gets used up or changed in service such that the lip seals shrink a bit. New oil has new seal swell additive that "livens" up the seal again.

Yes, but that's a stop gap measure. Why do we need to swell the seals, what's wrong with this picture?
Deere has specific fluid maintenance intervals, what happened to them?
Again, seals fail because bearings go bad or because internal pressures push out the lubricant. If you look at the tranny you'll see a vent on top, maybe the front box needs a vent?

Does this stop the leak?

I'm thinking it prevents the leak (outside of bearing failure related leaks).

OK, that's getting somewhere because it means the leak is due to pressure from expansion.

Has anyone here replaced their own seals using a SKF (CR=Chicago Rawhide) brand unit? Is the oem part a nitrile seal or viton? viton being more resistant to chemicals

Has anyone contacted Deere? After all these problems there must be a solution. Is it just to make sure your levels are up and how long does it take before they drop to the point the porblem has to be addressed?

Ask and you shall receive.
JD2520 Two years ago, a day or two prior to expiry of warranty, left front seal, heavy seepage (small puddle on garage floor).
Four months later, same thing, same wheel.
Been OK since.

i was going to look into it to see if i can match it, but haven't gotten around to it. the knuckle seal is about 4" in diameter, and about $20 from JD. not sure how cheap you can find seals this big...seems to me when i buy 1.5" seals, thay are about $6-$8, so $20 for a 4" doesn't seem too far out of line. but one of these days, i still want to check.

So did it lose fluid at a greater rate than the normal service interval for checking it? Maybe Deere figures you'll lose fluids under certain conditions but isn't concerned because you should be checking levels before it reaches a dangerous point.
