I have absolutely had 'old gas' turn to junk. Yellowed, cloudy and stinks really, really bad. And it wasn't anywhere near 10 years old. Maybe 2 at the most. Did it take on too much moisture through condensation? Could be. Stored in a 2+ gallon plastic container.

Could the gas in the OP have been pure gas rather than corn juice?

Someone probably just took a leak in your tank.

When we were out in OK a couple weeks ago, I noticed certain chains of gas stations that had some interesting pump setups.

2 nozzles.

1 by itself that was 87 octane 10% ethanol. The one on the other end of the pump there was a 2nd nozzle with 3 grades of non-ethanol, 87, 89, 93 (I think).

The 10% ethanol was usually about 22 cents cheaper.

3 grades of non-ethanol?!

And I’ve just now been able to locate a few dependable stations with one grade of non-ethanol gas.

Gasoline fuels have been a time and temp sensitive commodity for over 120 years. They run down pipelines without oxygen until they reach our tanks or cans. Then oxygen cross links with it and it changes into something our engines and fuel systems do not like. Heat makes this process happen faster, same as most chemical reactions. This process has been happening with or without the addition of alcohol.

I spoke with a fuel delivery driver years ago. Says he never knows where he is going to pick up and where it will be delivered. It's a real mish mash and he implied the grade might not even be accurate.

CBC Marketplace did a piece on whether premium grades are worth the money, but I felt it terribly done, because they never even took a sample of what they were using to a lab to find the Octane number. That might have been a bigger story right there. So, I don't even trust the non-ethanol label either.
