Well, I just got off the phone with my local Yamaha ATV dealer and I spoke to the Tech person who installs winches all the time and he said the warn winch person did'nt know what he was talking about. He said the winch would go on the tractor just fine. He said as long as I have the tractor running when it's being used there should'nt be a problem.I will probally install it this weekend and I will let you know how it turns out. He also said they never install an in-line fuse on ATV's because they don't require one but if I felt safer that it would'nt hurt a thing.

I would say your ATV tech person needs some schooling on circuitry as well. Every circuit should be fused. It is a real fire hazard as well as a hazard to the winch if you don't protect it. I wouldn't risk it. Look into sizing the wire correctly for the draw and then simple circuit breakers to protect both the wire and winch. They're not expensive. Most auto parts stores should be able to help you.

Greg,
I found the work light wire. Is that a ground wire that's with it? It's a black wire with a circle type end on it like a ground.

Donny,
Yes it is. Those Kubota engineers were thinking ahead on that one, weren't they?

You might not have to use the ground wire, depending on your lights and how you mount them. If you get a good enough ground to the tractor frame you don't need to use the provided wire (although it won't hurt if you want to). But if you strap them onto the ROPS or something you'll probably have to use the ground. But you might be able to get away with running only one wire (I'm lazy that way /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

Well, I had alot of things going on today and did not get to work with my winch. A friend of mine came over and looked over the diagram of the winch and how it was suppose to hook up and he said it should be a breeze to wire up. The winch wires will run through a silonoid which in trun runs to a toggle switch that turns power on and off to the winch. The wires that came with the winch are (4) 8 gauage wires that go from the silonid to the battery and to the remote switch. There is (1) 18guage hot wire that runs from the battery to a in-line fuse to the toggle switch. I'm not rigging anything up. Everything is going by the instructions in the winch instruction book. I will keep in touch and let you know how it turns out.

I got the winch installed today and ohh what fun it was. The hardest part about it was running the wiring so it would be out of the way. When it was all done it worked like a charm. I hooked the power from the accessory wire under the seat with a in-line fuse and a toggle switch. It looks like a pro did it.

Good job - I'd guess the only thing that might happen (as long as you bypassed the tractor circuitry and went straight to the battery) is that you'll shorten battery life. But to have a winch on the tractor vs. replacing a fairly (well, sort of) inexpensive battery is...priceless /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

I will get some pics soon if I can figure out how to post them. I not planning on using the winch much. It's mostly for looks but if I need it I will have it. It makes the tractor look tough with the winch mounted to the front, plus when I'm hauling the tractor on a trailer the winch will come in handy to tie the front down.I can hook the cable to the trailer and tighten it down.Instant hold down strap for the front. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Now that the winch is mounted it's time for lights. I'm going to look for a couple of 40 watt lights. I'll let you know how it turns out.
