I was plowing/harrowing in some tight quarters today, lots of forward-and-reverse over short distances. I think I need a speedball when backing up my 1962 Case 430.

What is a quality unit? And reasons why I should NOT use a speedball?

thank you!

A manual steer tractor with a gearbox can break bones with a knob in place.
This is the kind of feedback I need — thank you!

I have a knob on both the X744 and the Toolcat. Both of those are hydraulic steering (no problem).

Years ago my dad had me plowing with a Ford 801 (manual steering box) and then he thought he would help me by putting a knob on. I didn't break bones but my hand swelled up pretty bad and the knob was removed.

My machine is hydraulically articulated, so no chance of the machine snapping the the steering wheel around fast if I hit something. I've had a spinner knob on it for 21 years. Works great.

For that matter, I haven't had a vehicle without power steering since my '70 Nova that died around 1984. ;)

Our mid 70's IH2500b tractor loader had hydraulic steering as well.

Is your 430 wide front or narrow front? Narrow front were terrible for catching something with single tire and spinning the wheel. Wide front don’t recall being much of a problem. This was on mostly older IH Farmall tractors like M & H, 300.

Wide front. Here in Appalachia the terrain is uneven and steering requires constant adjustment, especially in reverse. Trying to steer one handed on that hard-rubber original steering wheel in reverse while twisted around in the seat isn’t exactly easy…

I took the PS pump out of my 1975 Impala. It was fine when moving but city parking was “entertaining”.

On the other hand, nobody wanted to borrow my car anymore!
