I was at my wife's family reunion at one of the cousin's little cabins in the woods when I noticed this thing sitting along side his other more normal looking implements. I've never seen a ride-on, three point hitch rake. And I'm wondering if that is what it is at all. Do you think this thing had wheels at one time and was made to be pulled by a horse? The 3 pt attachment looks welded on. Anyone want a ride?

Maybe it is just a fancy lawn chair?

Looks to me to be made form an old horse drawn rake. probably left the seat on as a joke. Or its possible some fool actually rode there.

Looks like a home-made dump rake. (May not be home-made either) From your location, maybe a pine straw rake. Years ago, horse drawn dump rakes were the norm for haying.

Yes, it probably is dangerous. Farming is safer now than it was years ago, but it's still a dangerous way to make a living. Equipment like that didn't do much to lower the injury/death rate in years past.

That sure looks like the old horse drawn dump rake we had when I was a kid. (That's a long time ago:eek: ). Ours had large steel spoke wheels attached on either side of the main frame the seat is mounted on. There was a foot pedal you stepped on that engaged a dog on one of the wheels to raise the rake and dump the load of hay. You could also dump it by pulling on the big lever there. Ours was an old Frost & Woods (i.e. Cockshutt) that was originally horse drawn, but father cut the pole off to pull behind the tractor. I got to ride the rake. The dog that connected to the foot pedal eventually wore out and I had to dump by hand with the lever. That built up muscles in the right arm and blisters on the right hand.

Lower that seat a bit and weld a set of handlebars in place
and it mite be a fun ride. At least if you fell off it would
be off the back and you wouldn't get raked over.
Going over rough ground would be like riding a mechanical bull.

Brings back memories. It's a horse drawn peice converted to 3 point hitch. Very common back when. I fondly remember a 2 row corn planter of my dad's complete with seat and fertilizer cans. :)

I spent a lot of hours on one of those that was modified to attach to the drawbar of our little Allis "C" tractor. The raking part was sure more fun than loading that loose hay on the trailer, and getting it put away in the barn!

Looks like that would give you one heck of a back ache! May be fun for alittle bit, at least to watch!

We call them buggy rakes... I have one setting in the yard as my yard art along with a JD 472 horse plow and pull disc.
