Thanks Chris,

That make more sense. I've always considered a truck to be able to do either max cargo or max towing, but not both at the same time.

Even at max loads on the EQ hitch, and 10,400 in the truck, it still would exceed the GCWR.;)

10,400# seems way too high for me to be trying to pull max load. I would expect somewhere closer to 7-8000# for the truck weight with fuel and a couple bodies.

I run the truck weight up there but currently only pull the 7K trailer. Much better to have the weight in the truck than towing it. The 39' bumper pull travel trailer would put me at the limits.

That's alot of the advantage of goosenecks/5th-wheels over bumper-pull trailers. Though I have to admit that bumper-pull is all that I own. (I'm including penal-hitch in the bumper pull catagory)

Looks like that trailer would have a carrying capacity of about 1800 pounds, the vehicle is rated at 1500 pounds. Not sure what the tractor model but with fel and mower and whatever is hanging off the back would guess about 2200 lbs. Tires look fine, tie-down job is better than many commercial I see, trailer deck is reinforced with track under tires, the vehicle is sitting well and doesn't appear to be suffering excess tongue weight which maybe evidence of improperly proportioned trailer weight. The guy seems to know what he's doing or at least done a little research, though not legal, with careful three steps ahead type non-highway driving I wouldn't anticipate any problems.

I agree. The tie down shows someone is aware for the risks and how to limit them. Afterall he has a spare and a wheeled tongue jack too.:D

They can be a real pain to back up though. I have never found one with a lockout which works correctly for backing. They keep releasing and then the brakes lock on you.

Thats why I put a "lock out solenoid" on each and every trailer I own. You are right about the brakes being good. My uncle bought a new boat back in about 2002 with tandem Disc Brakes. It was a 21' run about and was the first I had seen with Disc Brakes. We could not back that thing up with my 1 ton Diesel truck in 4 wheel drive on a gravel lane. The boat and trailer only weighed 5,000# but boy did it stick to the ground.

If you are not familiar with a lock out solenoid its a electrical solenoid that goes inline between the master cylinder and the brake line. They cost $30 and use a single wire to give a signal from the reverse lights on the truck to activate it and block the flow of brake fluid. Works great. On a truck with the 7 pin round most have the reverse light wired into one of the pins already so its a 1 hour job to install and wire.

Thanks for the info. Might be handy if I get energetic and feel like rewiring/repiping the brakes.

The last two tandem boat trailers I had were equipped with the surge disc brakes. They would slide the trailer wheels if you had to stop quickly. Never any problems with them. They also had the electric solenoid that locked out the surge brakes when backing. No problems with that, either.
