Re: Doesn\'t exist (My perfect truck)

One would think that with Daimler owning dodge . They have been putting diesals in cars for a long time, that soon they would put a Mercedes Diesal in a 1/2 ton truck.

Re: Doesn\'t exist (My perfect truck)

Yea I really can't believe we haven't seen one yet. We used to have a couple Ford Ranger diesels on the ranches. They would get 30-40 mpg and lasted until the body fell off of them. Then Ford quit making them. I guess back then there was just no interest in them.

Chevy had the diesel that was just fine for a 1/2 ton pickup. It got alot of bad press but that engine wasn't that bad. On the highway you could get 30 plus mpg with it.

Chevy also had the little Isuzu 4-cylinder diesel that was almost indestructible and got great mileage.

Perfect truck?

Not going to happen since women started driving them. "Trucks" are now to go get groceries. You can barely carry anything with a 15 series anymore.

I want a 15 series, (prefferably Ford /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) with a decent motor 350 ci or better, gasser is fine, with a REAL standared transmission, with a 2 speed rear end. A set low, and a set high. Power and highway mileage. Vinal floor.

Re: Doesn\'t exist (My perfect truck)

Instead of a two speed rear end, I'd much prefer the Gear Vendors over/under drive. I guess they still make them for both manual and automatic transmissions, although the only one I've had was on an '89 Chev. one ton dually with a 454 cu. in. engine. They're not cheap, but sure are a pleasure to drive.

I'd like a one ton with a tag axle instead of duallys and the 10 foot bed sure sounds nice. Might have to park by Braile and sound effects though.

Re: Doesn\'t exist (My perfect truck)

The GM 350 deisel built from late 1980 and on had all the bugs worked out of it. The lower end was beefed up and the head olts were larger to keep the gaskets from blowing. I had a 1981 Olds Delta 88 Royal Brougham that got 33 mpg's on the highway with the air on. The bad part on these motors was the injection pump diaphram. The diaprham disovled and broke up after about 50k and plugged the fuel return port in the pump. This causing the motor to smoke like crazy from flooding. To repair it was costly unless you could pull the pump and replace it yourself. The intake manifold also need to be removed to get the pump out. The parts were cheap at under $100.00 to rebuilt the pump and replace the gaskets back in the late 80's. I wish I kept that car now witht he way gas prices have gone up.

Hey chucko,
I know what you mean. Especially with the Mercedes and Detroit Diesel under the same umbrella. I think it'd be safe to say they have the expertise to do it well!

I really miss my old '84 Ford Escort diesel. It had a 2.0l Mazda-made engine and it could really move, but, what I loved most was the 50+mpg highway and 40+mpg city. You really had to flog that thing to get it into the upper 30's in town.
Rust and obsolete parts are what finally killed the little car. Ford put a 20 year engine in a 6 year body with a 4 year paint job.

No way are they [diesels] dead yet. They are just misunderstood by most people.

Well, I don't do Fords if I can help it but I hear you on the rest of it. One other thing, I want a wooden bed floor. They might rot out after a few years, depending on where you live, but they will take a whole lot more abuse than a steel bed. I have a couple of dents in the bed of my Dodge from lobbing stumps into it, the dents wouldn't be there if it had a wood floor.
