Dog breeds for mini farm

Standard Poodle or Border Collie. The poodles don't shed. They are a pretty versatile dog if one does not get influenced by the show dog hair cuts. Both types can handle adverse weather. The poodles may like water.

Jack Russell for rodent control and Guinea Hens for tics and Muscovy ducks for slugs.

rhodesians are sight hounds, bred to chase animals. They are typically hard to train off leash. I had ahalf bred Rhodesian, he was good dog in a fence or on leash. Went deaf to commands ,off leash. Coworker was a rhodesian breeder that showed her champions, she said my dog was typical behavior

Thanks for the feedback.
It's seems hard to find a reputable breeder of the 'doodles'...

I've also done great with various rescue dogs. My latest is right now laying in her too small bed. A mixed chocolate lab. Probably pit bull or boxer chocolate lab mix. She was rescued from the side of road when just a small puppy. After checking every house in the rural area, waiting two weeks to see if someone would claim her, she's be my best buddy for over 11 years.

We have had labs and Newfoundland lab mix. The labs are nice dogs but required more training and sometimes were to smart for there own good. The Newfoundland/lab mix is a nice dog, but the fur is a hassle. Have an English mastiff now. For me he is best dog we have had smart easy to train good around people, short hair, he is harmless, At 170 lbs people see him running at your car people won't even get out of the car, he just sits there and looks at them. All our dogs have roamed free on our farm, so he has stayed thin and doesn't have the typical mastiff bulk. The mastiff goes where I go and best of all i don't have to lean over to pet him.

Like others have said depends on what you are looking for.

One more vote for a Border Collie. Smallish go any place dog. Hangs out with you, or working happy to do either.

Border Collie - very smart. Herding dog.
Standard Poodle - Excellent hunting dog. Best nose. Smarter than you. (No offense, please.)
Pit Bull - unpredictable. Excellent guard dog. Powerful.
Doberman - Excellent guard dog - extremely alert.
Blue Healer - Excellent herding dog. Smart!
My personal choice - Short haired German Shepherd. (I prefer short haired dogs.)

Anyone have a Std Poodle and chickens/ducks?

Unfortunately for me, with small children (and their friends), a German Sheppard is out.

Sorry to the OP for distraction.

Be sure to research health issues with the larger dogs especially. One of our sons had a succession of 4 Great Danes, all which suffered greatly from hip dysplasia problems and had to be put down far to early.

And in this day and age of vet medical miracles be sure to look into health insurance. Vet bills can escalate rapidly and I think part of the problem is that they can charge $300 a day for "hospital" boarding and expect insurance will pay for most of it.

Yes, I have personal experience with that mix. Zero problems.
