I don't worry too much about the ratings of dog food. My (wifes German Shepherd) eats better than I do. He gets Kibbles and Bits dry as filler which according to this site is only 1 star but the wife cooks for him everyday. He gets chicken, beef or pork meat boiled up with vegetables like celery and carrots to give it flavor. This is mixed with his Kibbles to form his diet. He also get a generous supply of bones, beef and pork, to chew on plus any scrap meat from our meals that is left over.

Cooking for one dog is one thing but cooking for six dogs would be over the top for my wife. She's already a little edgy with six dogs.
I'm afraid I would be the one eating kibble. :D

Been using Blue Buffalo Wilderness but thinking about switching since its price has recently gone thru the roof. $58 bucks for a 24 lb. bag at Amazon!

Ive been feeding my golden retrievers Kirkland signature dry since birth. The Older male lived to be 15 and my female lived to be over 16. The puppy is now 10, and they have all been very healthy. I see Kirkland rated 4.0 - 4.5...so all is good

We feed our German Shepherd Blue Wilderness (Blue Buffalo) which is rated high and is a good brand.

I have been thinking about trying a raw diet. Anybody feed their dogs raw? According to some, it's the best diet you can out a dog on.

I wonder how accurate such "ratings" are; probably lots of healthy dogs running around that are fed on almost any of those brands, or the manufacturers couldn't stay in business. And I see that a number of Hill's dog foods are listed but Hill's Healthy Advantage, which is recommended by our veterinarian and is what we're currently using, isn't even included. Maybe because it's only sold by vets, and of course that may be the reason the vet recommends it.

Check the site I posted for plenty of Hills Science Diet and Hills R/X dog foods listed in the one star catagory. Dogs can't digest the same kinds of food we can digest and most food out there is predominantly filler with very little meat product.

OK, but how do we know the folks doing those ratings know more than our local veterinarian? Is our vet lying because sells Hill's (they also sell a number of others). I do expect to change to something else before long because the little mutt's too fat, we've restricted her diet to this particular dog food in the amount recommended by the vet and she's not losing any weight. She eats every bit of it and would like more, but she's not losing any weight on it. And I reckon she's pretty healthy except for being overweight. Kind of like me.

This thread has been an interesting read

My houndly bunny runners have been on an Iams and wild raw rabbit (and occasional raw chicken) diet.......but seeing the 2.5 rating on the Iams may change the program

I have one beagle that I'm trying to put more meat on his bones, so I'll look into these ratings more closer
