This thread has been an interesting read

My houndly bunny runners have been on an Iams and wild raw rabbit (and occasional raw chicken) diet.......but seeing the 2.5 rating on the Iams may change the program

I have one beagle that I'm trying to put more meat on his bones, so I'll look into these ratings more closer

It's been a few years ago, but when our grandson was in high school one of his projects was to research and determine the best dog food for their dogs. Now I don't know exactly what research he did and/or whether the results would be the same today, but at that time, his conclusion was that Iams was one of the best. And we used Iams until the vet recommended this Hill's Healthy Advantage dog food because our Chihuahua was overweight.

We were feeding our dog Science Diet from our vet. Maggie, our dog, just didn't seem to have as much energy as we thought she should, coat didn't shine, she shed all over the place and she produced a ton of obnoxious, drive you out of the house, gas. After reading reviews of Science Diet, and not liking what we read, we changed her diet to Taste of The Wild and all her issues went away and TOTW doesn't really cost any more than the SD did.

We first sought out "alternative" dog foods when one of our dogs with some 23 alergies did no better on the vet food. We have had amazing results with Blue Basics sensitvie solution formula. His skin was terrible and had pretty much cleared after we had switched though he has had some set backs due to the soil being more exposed as the grass dies off over the winter. We usually put straw on the muddy area's from dog pressure but he has issues with straw as well so his area a bit muddy for now.

After we fostered but then took in another boxer, we decided to put them on a wheat free diet as well given the breeds propensity to cancer. Then, we ended up putting all eight (count em') dogs on alternative foods.

We are feeding Earthborn Primitive Natural and also an Earthborn Weight Control formula that just came out and also a Blue Wilderness Natural Diet. We buy mostly from a store called Petscense, buy ten, get one free.

I figure I am doing my relatives a favor, there will not be any money to fight over when I am gone, lol!

Don't forget those biscuit treats you give your canine friends. They also contain mainly wheat, etc.

You know, I really like a thread like this. It seems to spur people on to investigate just what they are doing to their animals. Some of the food is almost animal abuse. Such knowledge is the first step to the better life for an animal.

I should keep to my own business but pets are like children in that they are totally dependent on their owners (parents) for their lot in life. There is no real protection for pets as there is for children so it pains me to see occasions of neglect, pain, and suffering that sometimes creeps into any animal's (including the human kind) life.

Some time in the future I plan to bump this thread to keep the awareness fresh.

I had to pick up another bag of dog food this morning, so I visited with a couple of people in the veterinary clinic that we use. Their story is a little different from the Dog Food Advisor. Now if you want to believe him, that's fine with me since I don't own any stock in any of the dog food companies.:D But I hope you clicked on "About" and read his qualifications and the methods he used to rate the different brands. You might also find his FAQ interesting.

The AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) sets the nutritional standards for pet foods and apparently there are two methods of determining nutritional adequacy: (1) the Formulation Method, and (2) the Feeding Trial Method. The container should include something to the effect that this food is "formulated to meet nutritional levels" (the cheap and quick method, and apparently what the Dog Food Advisor uses) or "feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate" that it provides complete and balanced nutrition.

So I'm certainly not qualified to evaluate the Dog Food Advisor and his methods, but I think I'll stay with what my veterinarian folks say and ignore his ratings.

Good point Bird......we all would like to feed our animals the best of what is offered but in reality we don't sit around and chow down on all steak, eggs and bacon everyday.....I would think fillers in a reasonable small volume to balance nutrition can't be too unhealthy...I guess it all depends on the activity level of the dog

Besides I like a few fillers while chugging down a beer before dinner...:drink:

Some of the food is almost animal abuse.

IMO ALL of the standard big name brands are animal abuse. It's a case of pay me now or pay the vet later.
