Airedales are smart and always doing something unexpected and usually funny. Hatchet was only silent when we hunted. I'd
trained him that way. Using .22 shorts in an old Stevens single shot bolt action or in an old Savage falling block, you can kill
twice as many squirrels and walk 1/2 as much with a silent squirrel dog. Any other time, he was very vocal and boisterous.
He loved to wrestle. They are also devoid of fear and make great guard dogs and family protectors. My younger sister (by 12
years) was 3 and out in the yard hunting Easter Eggs in 1966. It was a very warm spring. Hatchet was enjoying the
petting the kids were giving him when like a shot he tore off the porch, ran down the yard right at my sister knocking her down
as he tore past her and grabbed a Copperhead she was about to step on. Scared the crap out of my Mother but after that,
she was prone to giving Hatchet little treats now and then and my Mother was decidedly not a dog person.
