That's exactly what I thought when I lost my last one. I swore I wouldn't put myself through that again. I missed him daily.
After a couple of months, I started to think that while I couldn't replace him, it might be good to have another, and I got a new pup. He's definitely not the same, but he has his own distinct personality, and I love him just as much. You sound like a "dog person". When the time is right (for you) - sooner rather than later, get another!

Thank you. Oh, there’s no question on another Boston. Just need a little adjustment time.

I know exactly how you feel. A couple years ago I lost my Weimariner after 13 years. He was with me every day. Always by my side. I was devistated...Couldnt even think about getting another one. Then one night I was clicking around on Facebook and found a post where someone in Tennessee was getting rid of a 9-10 month old Weim ...because he is the "wrong color"!!! ...There was something about the picture of him that grabbed me. I made arrangements to have him brought to Mass and he is 100% a part of the family now. He has a completely different personality than my last whim..and thats fine. He makes me smile everyday and gives more than he gets. On another post here somewhere I said that a dogs only fault, is that one day they will break your heart. I still believe that to be true. I have my past doberman and Weims paw prints tattooed on my body..They are still always with me.

We’ve had 7 Boston’s over a span of 20 years. One still living. The other six are in urns in my wife’s craft room. It’s getting kind of crowded on that shelve.

The Power of the Dog
Rudyard Kipling - 1865-1936

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find it'syour own affair
But you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled(how still!).
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone- wherever it goes -for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long
So why in-Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

I'm sorry for your loss. It's a horrible loss, one that for some of us is equal to or at times even worse than that of a human loss.

I currently have a "I'm never getting another dog. They hurt to much to take" dog.

I had T-Rex who was here when I got my Angel (she's my local cop abused rescue ). T-Rex or Rex was our chocolate lab who at 8 years old died pretty quickly of cancer in multiple places. I was done with 2 dogs at a time.... When Angel leaves me one day, I swore we were done being dog people.

Then we met a red bone hound and yellow lab mix. Meet Red.... Whole no dog can replace the personally of a past pet, each loves with a ferocity that you just can't resist. Each has its heart wrenching traits and humorous quirks.

Red will never be Rex. But no dog could ever possibly be red. He's a part of family as much as any other dog was and as much as any human is.View attachment 654741View attachment 654742 20200507_204626.jpg20200502_120035.jpg20200412_154319.jpg

Thank you and thanks for sharing your story. My first instinct was to tell myself “never again” but I know I’m fooling myself. There will one day be another best buddy I’m sure.
