Dog stories

Friends of mine were talkin' recently about the best & worst dogs we've had. I mentioned that Zeke (My huge Newfie/lab) once saw me fall thru the ice in the back pond, came running down the hill, grabbed me by the coat collar and dragged my cold wet azz back to the house one yank at a time. Mom saw all this happen, handed Zeke a large lidded cup of coffee with cream & sugar, and that dammed dog ran it out to me !

Worst dog I ever had.

Why's that you ask ?

Everybody here knows I don't take sugar in my coffee...

Bird dogs retrieving birds is what they were born to do;some are just better than others.
My current German Short-Hair is a bird finding /retrieving machine. It was three years before he was a good retriever.
We see all kind of dogs on our preserve, have owned Labs,English Pointers and currently GSP's.
They all have their place for sure.
Mine were both just pets, but as you say retrieving is in their blood. Most people here just shoot grouse on the ground; I carry a .22 pistol when working and have taken more birds with that than with any other firearm.
A few years ago I shot at a grouse in a hemlock tree; using the trunk as a backstop. It flew off and I thought I had missed. For some reason Ruger wasn't with me that day. A month later we were working in the area and he brought it to me.

While pheasant hunting as a kid, we occasionally got skunked...But our runt of the litter black lab sometimes out hunted us by disappearing in a thicket and coming out with a rabbit.

Neither of my previous dogs were trained to hunt. Yet what amazed me is how many grouse I thought I had missed, yet they brought back to me.
My grandfather had an Black lab/ springer spaniel mix. Looked like a black lab except for a white triangle on his chest and the spaniel fluff on the back of his legs and bottom.

Neighbor mentioned too me that they were out hiking out back and Poncho flushed and snatched a partridge out of the air.

Well about a month later I went wondering through the woods with poncho. We came to a section that had swail grass about 4ft tall. Well poncho got a scent of something and tore off into that grass.

He had a hop/ jump that he did at full speed through the grass. All you would see is him going full tilt and his head popping up randomly above the grass.

Well, i heard a partridge start thumping out in the grass. Just as the partridge cleared the top of the grass, ponchos head appeared snatching the bird out of mid air.

It honestly reminded me of and looked exactly like jaws grabbing the boat in the movie

It was pretty fascinating to watch poncho on the hunt

We picked up this 7 month old boxer mix at a rescue on Weds. Named her Jazzy. She was shutdown having been left alone after her two siblings were adopted out.

I had to pick her up (at least 40lbs) to take her to our truck. Once in the house, she climbed right up onto this old chair that we had put in our kitchen for her.

I also had to carry her out to go potty a couple of times as well as up and down the steps off of our deck. Four days later, she is walking right with me. Up/down the steps.

The house has been just too quiet since we said good bye to our two seniors last summer.

Here’s a new development at our house. We were out for a bit, and our Airedale did this to the garbage: (First time ever.)

Ok, so next time we left him alone, we LOCKED the garbage can. So this time he grabs the edge of the black bag that was sticking out a bit, and drags the bin it all over the house, tearing off pieces as he went, leaving a trail of garbage bag as he went. BUT, at least he never got the bin open!

We got a new bin today, frm now in we will spray the outside with L

Good for you as well as the pup!!
I understand all too well about the empty house, as I'm starting to feel like Mr BoJangles. I was at a friend's house today where they just "acquired" a new cat. They are trying to find a home for it as their current feline wouldn't tolerate another. I am not a cat person but will admit I was tempted... until they mentioned that they believe it's pregnant.

It always pisses me off when somebody dumps an animal rather than accepting responsibility for it. At the very least grow a set and drop it off at a shelter.

Rant over😬 .Enjoy the time with your new pup.

I don't have a lot of experience with boxers, but from the limited exposure I've had with them, their goofy dogs. Hyper and definitely different. Looks like you found a fun pal.

I have had maybe dozen or so over the years. They need to be obediance trained. I have had males that do not get along with other males. They typically like to jump up on people so that needs to be addressed. Some are slobber pusses. I had a 95lb male that hated to walk through water but love getting hosed off. I had a female that if you walked her up to a body of water, she would jump in. They love their people and react to your expressions. And yes, they can be rather goofy. Sadly, they are prone to cancer.

We have had great luck with Chessies. Good hunters, protectors and great with small children. I can still see the look he would give me when I missed a shot in the dove field.
