Now the story:

I had a Golden back in my youth.
When she was about 15 months old I took her out for waterfowl.
While my buddy and I were standing in a slough with "cricket" at my side, a flight of teal went right over us. Well my buddy had a pump gun, and I had my Stevens double gun. We dropped 5 birds from that flight.

That dang dog went out and got every one! Never had been out before.

Of course one of the birds dropped less than 5 feet away. That got her interested. ;-)

One dog I had wasn't afraid of anything but gun shoots. We were walking on a remote tail, and then there were distant gun shoots. Dog went to ground. I mean flat out, dog goes to ground. And would not move. I had to carry him out for 1/4 mile. 60 pound dog.
My shepherd is fine with gun shots. It's thunder that she doesn't like.

One rumble of thunder and I'm being dragged back home.

Mine does that exact thing. If I shoot, she comes over to see what 's going on. Neighbors setting off
fireworks, she doesn't pay any attention. BUT, lightning and thunder roaring and she can't get close enough
to me or get in the house quick enough. I'm talking shivering scared of thunder.

When I lived in Nebraska I had a boxer that turned out to be a really good pheasant retriever. One day a highway patrol friend invited my dog and I to go hunting on his dad's farm.
We get to his dad's farm I get out of the car and my dog jumps out and takes off. I have no idea what he is up too and doesn't come back when I call, his dad comes out to greet us and here comes my dog with a chicken in his mouth.

In addition to farming his dad raised chickens. I made the dog turn the chicken loose, the farmer look at my dog and his only comment was "Dang chickens won't lay another egg for a month".

Ours doesn't like fireworks either.

Neither of my previous dogs were trained to hunt. Yet what amazed me is how many grouse I thought I had missed, yet they brought back to me.

Bird dogs retrieving birds is what they were born to do;some are just better than others.
My current German Short-Hair is a bird finding /retrieving machine. It was three years before he was a good retriever.
We see all kind of dogs on our preserve, have owned Labs,English Pointers and currently GSP's.
They all have their place for sure.
