Was she a politician before the shootings, or was it that experience that motivated her to try and make a difference for the good?

JB

The later, she was just a person (chiropractor) who watched her parents die, and became a politician later.

On Wednesday, October 16, 1991, Hupp and her parents were having lunch at the Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen. She had left her gun in her car to comply with Texas state law at the time, which forbade carrying a concealed weapon. When George Hennard drove his truck into the cafeteria and opened fire on the patrons, Hupp instinctively reached into her purse for her weapon, but it was in her vehicle. Her father, Al Gratia, tried to rush Hennard and was shot in the chest. As the gunman reloaded, Hupp escaped through a broken window and believed that her mother, Ursula Gratia, was behind her. Hennard put a gun to her mother's head as she cradled her mortally wounded husband. Hupp's mother and father were killed along with twenty-one other persons. Hennard also wounded some twenty others. As a survivor of the Luby's massacre, Hupp testified across the country in support of concealed-handgun laws. She said that had there been a second chance to prevent the slaughter, she would have violated the Texas law and carried the handgun inside her purse into the restaurant

OP here, when I originally started this thread, I had no idea that it would generate so much discussion and dissent, and then gradually end up being a debate about firearm ownership in general.

I respectfully request that we let the thread die as is, where is, and should any member wish to continue the debate, please start a new thread.

THANK YOU ALL. I do appreciate the viewpoints and information you have shared here.

She sounds like a real patriot, I never followed the debate because it had no impact on me, we already had Concealed carry. Of course I caught bits and pieces of it on the national news coverage at the time.

But if I were one of you guys that live in a state where she helped to get CC passed in, I'd have a poster of her on my wall!

Sorry you feel that way, I was enjoying the topic. But since you started the thread and you want it to die, so be it.

Good gun discussions usually do evolve from other/related subjects. It's hard to start a good civilized general firearm debate from scratch.
