In Texas, at least, and if you're 25 or older (used to be 16), you can take the driving test without any formal schooling or training, but you do have to go to a school to get a CHL (Concealed Handgun License) regardless of age.:D

1. You still have to take a test for a drivers license. What kind of test do you need to take to buy a gun?
2. Didn't you just previously mention that you can now conceal carry in a car without a permit?

Perhaps now you see the irony?

And let me be the first to point out that this thread is so far derailed that the train can't be found anywhere near the tracks LOL

Not really, It's a civilized gun discussion, I like it :)

Like I mentioned we only have CC in CT. But hasn't it only been the fairly recent past that has seen so many other states start allowing it?

Didn't it all get started with the Luby's shooting?

Luby's massacre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I remember seeing some of the hearings and that one woman pleading to allow concealed carry, and if she could of had a gun in her purse, things might of turned out a little better.

I don't understand your point. You don't have to take any test to buy a gun and you don't have to take any test to buy a car.

You do have to take a test (in Texas, anyway) to carry the gun and you do have to take a test to drive the car. And both the gun and the car are very dangerous things when used improperly.

Yep, JB, that's what happened in Texas. Except that the Wikipedia link would indicate that the 1995 law only removed "the personal discretion of the issuing authority to deny such licenses", when actually there was no such thing as a CHL in Texas prior to that time so there was no "discretion" involved.

I could be wrong, but I've always been asked for insurance paperwork when buying a car. I don't know many people who buy a car that don't already have a drivers license, to have a drivers license, you do need to take a test. It's also easier to find $300 bucks laying for a gun than 5k for a used car, so normally a loan is involved with a car.

To buy a gun, you don't need much of anything other than not to be a convicted felon. I could be wrong, but Texas is only one of 7 states that don't allow open carry (I think about 11 other states that require a license to open to carry), however, as you just recently mentioned, you can know carry a sidearm in your vehicle in Texas without having to take a test.

You're correct, both a car and gun are very dangerous things when used improperly.

My point is that "normally" you have to take a test to drive/buy a car because driving is a privilege, but anyone can own a gun and go shooting because it's a right. Yes, sometimes people own guns and cars and don't legally follow the process to own either, but people in general don't hop into a car and try to kill as many people as possible.

The weapons of our forefathers are not the same weapons of today. Hard for a guy in the 1700's to grab a flintlock and go out on a killing spree with one gun.

It's been about the last 10-12 years in which most states have become "Shall Issue" rather then "May Issue" in regards to firearms carry permits. There are still holdouts with the "May Issue" (NY, MD and one or two others) and only one state (IL) that denies it's citizens this basic human right.

Rep. Suzanna Hupp of TX was the lady who testified about her inability to defend herself when her parents were murdered at the Luby's Resturant.

They don't in general, grab a gun and start killing people either.

I have never been asked for paperwork of any kind when buying a car. Registering one, yes, but buying from a private seller in a cash transaction, no.
If you are buying from a dealer who is also registering the car for you, I can see where you would need to provide proof of insurance, but if you buy a car and tow/trailer it away, there is no insurance requirement (at least not in NY).
It's also easier to find $300 bucks laying for a gun than 5k for a used car, so normally a loan is involved with a car.
$5k? I have never owned a car that cost more than $4k and I dont drive beater cars. Older yes ('97 Volvo V90 with ~115k miles and '02 Caravan with 95k miles), but beaters no.

I think you've got it just right about buying a car and being asked for insurance information.

And I've owned and driven beaters that cost me $50 up to new ones that cost over $18k, but I've also bought at least 7 new ones that cost less than $5k. Of course that's been a few years ago.

Was she a politician before the shootings, or was it that experience that motivated her to try and make a difference for the good?
