Dogs running loose

The thing a lot of folks don't understand. I'm pretty remote out here - mile long driveway puts my 80 acres a mile from a county road. Nearest neighbor is 4 and a half miles away - by road. The only thing that routinely visits me - the local wildlife and the neighbors cows come to the fence line - I dump my grass clipping over the fence. They really enjoy the green grass during the summer.

I admire your restraint. My puppy has come of age and he has become a chicken killer. My neighbor is furious and won't accept payment. If he doesn't quit escaping, I may shoot him myself.

Here is a novel idea that may take more effort on your part than shooting him yourself... find him a new home.?

We had one digger and one good jumper that would find a way out of the fenced in area, but running a couple of hot wires inside the perimeter of the fence put a end to that. We've also used a 6' dog fence that you put together, and I don't know of any dogs that could break out of that fence.

I have no idea how the dog is escaping. He has no collar so I have no idea who he belongs to. Never seen him around here before. Have tried to get him to come to me so I could put a collar and leash on him. No luck.

What irks me is an agency my tax dollars pay for won稚 do its job. Now I have to.

As for those suggesting trapping that will be the next step. I have a live trap appropriately sized for a coyote. It is large enough for this dog. I guess I will tell the humane society that I have him trapped and he will stay in the trap w out food until they come get him....

Of course I would not be that cruel but maybe it will get some action from them.

The question on how the dog was escaping wasn't directed towards you (I quoted Lelandwelds as he stated HIS dog was escaping).

There's about 270,000 people in our county. The Humane Society serves all of St. Joe County, except the city of South Bend, with a population of 101,000. That means the Humane Society serves about 169,000 people.

Do you know how much money they got from the county last year?

They got $165,000 from the county for their 2018 budget.....

Your less than $1.00 in tax support per year should not be that big of a stresser in your life to get you all that worked up about it.

Have you ever been over there on Grape Rd? It's a nice facility with very helpful people. They've helped us on several occasions with bat/rabies issues, and were instrumental in changing the way the state tests bats for rabies and reports back to the effected people. They've gotten a bad rap over the years because they were the sole organization in the county, so it fell on them to do the necessary things that no one else was willing to do. If anything, donate them a bag of pet food or a bucket of kitty litter once in a while. :thumbsup:

At least in our county, the human society is basically a group of people doing what they do because they actually care about animals. Ours was a non profit, and no one recieved pay for anything they did. Although I'm certain larger areas may have paid positions, I'm guessing no one is getting rich doing the work.

We got involved locally because we were appalled on how the county was handling unwanted pets.

Years ago when we got involved, the ***** hit the fan when the president of our local human society sued the county on how they were treating unwanted dogs. She got a lot of flack about it from local residents, but she succeeded (for the better IMO).

Still have to laugh, I didn't make brownie points at our very first meeting when I told the president that she had every right to sue the county, but that if she did, she should of stepped down from her position with the human society because it looked like the humane society was doing the suing, which wasn't the case.

I have never heard a story where animal control did anything for a roaming dog or dogs.
I believe animal control only exists so the police have a government agency they can call when they arrest someone and there is an animal under the suspect's care.

Like others, when it comes to roaming dogs, animal control says if I catch them, they will come get them. But they will not even try.

So basically citizens have to handle it themselves.

The Humane Society here only takes in animals. They will not come out at all.

It is sad, and I know you don't want to shoot them, however, as a society we kill 10's of millions dogs and cats every year just because there are not enough homes.

As mentioned, dogs are property. Even though you may be in the right, you never saw any dogs.

I'm certain not going to get into a big disagreement on how predators should be handled. Two years ago the neighbor had a "hired gun" kill 27 coyotes. Didn't seem to make the slightest difference in the local populations. Me out here on my 80 acres - I'm completely surrounded by several bands of coyotes. Always have been - always will be. I enjoy listening to them in the evening. Them and all the other creatures that go bump in the night.

I just leave them alone and they don't bother me one bit. Kind of wish they would come in a little closer, at night, and get some of the pocket gophers.

You - out east there atsah- feel, for some reason, that they must be killed. That's OK with me - that is totally your choice.

That's similar here. I enjoy the wild life too, didn't replace our cat because of the devastation, and i'm a cat/dog person. Dogs are kept in acre pen with fence 6 feet tall and 3 feet laying on the ground at the bottom to keep them from digging out. Like they say, good fences make good neighbors. We don't have any official animal control either. Did catch a pit bull one year that kept climbing our fence to get in to play with our dogs. Not a people friendly dog! Now, dogs that show up are drop offs from people that don't want to take their pets to the animal shelter.
