I assume he marked the tree he wanted you to cut.

I see that the tree had the same problem my wooded area is having with some kind of blight eating the tree from the inside out. Thus, the hollow part of the log.

Actually that hollow tree was just a hollw tree that had fallen. We are having a blight, but it attacks the bark of the tree, not the center. I have literally hundreds of large maples on my property that are dead or dying.

I don't take my dogs cutting with me, I just let one out when I got my camera. Here are some of my dogs:

Running that Dolmar and watching it cut through a large round in seconds, is priceless. What a rush!!

OK - rub it in :laughing: It was a brand new chain and full of bar oil..bar was not bent but the pine tree was fresh and green..lots of sap...the saw just did not have the power to go through...the trunk was wider than my chain...In my opinion I was taking on too much tree for the saw to handle. My Poulan has been a great saw , I have had it for over 12 yrs. now and no problems but it has its limitations as I found out today..This was the biggest tree I have ever tackled. I say again I wish I had your saw today for just 15 minutes and I would have been done...What ? have you never heard of sharing...:laughing::thumbsup:

The 7900 is the cat's meow(as they say)...wish I had one! I just sold my Poulan for $80. It was an OK saw for the occasional branch but now that we are burning wood for heat I need a bigger saw. Borrowing my friend's Jonsered until I can scrape up enough $$ for a saw up to the task. It only has an 18" bar but it has handled trunks up to 32".
The PT has been a great help in bucking trees and getting them out of the woods to my truck. If I can get the PT to the tree I use it to hold the tree off the ground while I buck up the rounds.

If your cutting big rounds you might want to have your PT split them down to size.

Sorry, I haven't mastered resizing yet. I guess I made them to small. Let me try again. What your looking at is the Atom splitter attached to the PT post hole digger head. It's sized for a 3pt phd so I had to make a spacer to get it to fit the PT head. I have only used it for about an hour so far, but it seems to work well reducing the big rounds to a manageable size. I can use some pretty big wood in the outdoor furnace but I find I can't pick them up as easy as I used to.

I have seen this method before but have been a bit skeptical. Any insight on how it is working for you? If money were no issue would you get a piston log splitter or keep this going?

I wonder also what this would do to a stump in the ground. Have you tried?
